Sega Project Assessment[edit]

This article came up on the new requests for assessment at Wikiproject Sega (better known as The Sega Project, and so I'm here on behalf of the department to assess the article. First let me compliment what is done properly here.

  • The list is long and has lots of articles.
  • The list is easy to read and understand.

That said, there are several things that need work. Here are a few pointers:

  • The opening paragraph is supposed to be a comprehensive summary of the contents of the list, but there's hardly anything here at all. No explanations, no general information, no nothing.
  • All the list is is a list, no extra information. The list quality can be improved by adding information such as release dates, multiplayer information, and (if you're really hardcore), a 1-2 sentence brief summary of all of the games, though that is probably above and beyond what is necessary.
  • There's red links everywhere. If those links can be fixed, fix them, and that will improve the article quality greatly.

Okay, now for the final grade: At the Sega Project we use the List-class for lists, unless it's a high quality list, when the featured list (FL) class is used. This article is List-class, and of high-importance. It has the potential to be a featured list with some work, but it has a VERY LONG way to come before that can happen. Check out some featured lists for more ideas on what a featured list is, such as List of South Park episodes. If you improve it and want me to take another look, just put the article back on the New Requests at the assessment department page. Redphoenix526 (talk) 23:25, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite[edit]

I started working on rewriting the list in a better format but things have got mad at uni and I rarely have the time to sit down and work on it. Feel free to continue and add bits every now and then!

Alternate titles, and columns in Lists of articles[edit]

I'd like to invite anyone contributing to this list to take part in a discussion we are currently having on the Talk:List of Nintendo 64 games#Removal of Alternate Titles and Number of Players where we are discussing the use of keeping alternate titles in the "List of...games" some have suggested that they take up too much space and that other columns could seem to be "useful only to fans", and other things that have been mentioned that, and other 'List of' talk pages. I think the alternate titles may be better as

Wikipedia Main Title Year Developer/Publisher Regions released Number of Players
1080° Snowboarding 1998 Nintendo/Nintendo JP, NA, PAL 1-4
64: Tenshi no Yakusoku 1999 Altron/Altron JP 1
AeroFighters Assault
Sonic Wings AssaultJP
1997 Paradigm Entertainment/Video System JP, NA, PAL 1-4
Michael Owen's WLS 2000
Mia Hamm 64 SoccerUSA
RTL World League Soccer 2000GER
Telefoot Soccer 2000FRA
2000 Silicon Dreams/THQ and SouthPeak Games NA, PAL 1-4

Please come and give your opinion, and hopefully keep these type of concerns from arising again and again at each "List of" pages. (Floppydog66 (talk) 21:22, 18 December 2008 (UTC))[reply]

I'm not sure "Wikipedia main title" is an appropriate heading (see WP:SELF). I've changed it to just "Title" for now. As for the alternate title column, I think merging it with the main title column if a good idea, as per the N64 list, but I don't particularly like the way the N64 list has currently implemented it -- centering the alternate titles is awkward, and there's no explanation that makes it clear that that's what they are, necessarily. If it's going to be merged with the Title column, I think at least something like "a.k.a." needs to be added wherever an alternate is used. --Fru1tbat (talk) 19:42, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected edit request on 3 August 2014[edit]

Change Genesis to Mega Drive.

80.42.163.251 (talk) 13:31, 3 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The answer to this one will be no, sorry. The explanation given for this is because of the long discussions and consensus achieved at Talk:Sega Genesis. Essentially, no consensus has been established on which title to use, but because of that, the current naming system is to be used and also by consensus, any further discussion on the matter without bringing new evidence to the table (warning: there's been over 10 years of fighting on the subject of "Genesis" vs. "Mega Drive") is now considered disruptive. Therefore, "Genesis" has to be kept for consistency with other Wikipedia articles. Red Phoenix let's talk... 14:06, 3 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Genesis vs Megadrive naming debate may well be considered disruptive, but to go with Genesis by default is the wrong thing to do. Megadrive is the official name of the machine. The system was known internationally as the Sega Megadrive and was only sold as the Genesis in the American region due to the Megadrive name being trademarked by another American company, forcing it to be sold under an secondary name. The default should therefore be Megadrive. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.29.214.95 (talk) 23:40, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Format of list pages[edit]

Please see WP: Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section This is the correct format for lead sections indicating a bold formatting of the article topic. Expandinglight5 (talk) 00:18, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If other video game list pages don't follow this format, they should be updated to conform. Other pages being incorrect is not any reason for this page to be incorrect. Please post any comments here before any further revisions. Further revisions without consensus should be considered edit warring (WP:3RR) and will be taken to an administrator. Expandinglight5 (talk) 02:32, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I really apologise for this but just I am getting this clear basically mentioning how many games are and how to sort should go at the top before mentioning what the console is and other information correct? Because it thats the case I will correct the other console articles. NakhlaMan (talk) 02:35, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The lead sentence should reference the article in bold print. This is the part that should follow the style of the lead section. Where the quantity of games is located in the lead section can be anywhere. Personally I think the lead paragraph in it's current state belongs together the way it is because that is the focus of the article. Arguably the history and background of the console is irrelevant since the article is focused on the list of games for the Sega Saturn not an article about the Sega Saturn itself. That information would typically be found on the Sega Saturn page. The content should stay focused on the subject of the particular article.

If you feel it makes more sense to move the sentence about the quantity of games further down in the lead paragraph closer to the list, I can see where that makes sense and I would be fine with that as I'm sure other editors would be as well. I'm happy to discuss further if you wish. Expandinglight5 (talk) 02:50, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I am because I even did the exact same thing with the Sega CD games and oddly enough I didnt know this was an issue considering the Sega CD list is a featured list which means its a good list. So what do we do just remove all the bloated information and just say how many games they were and the insturctions on how to sort and that's it? NakhlaMan (talk) 02:53, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also please take a look at what I have done to Sega CD and Master System lists. NakhlaMan (talk) 03:05, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The formatting of the list of Sega Master System, Sega CD and Sega Saturn look okay. It's arguably a bit bloated with content about the system rather simply focusing on the subject of the article, the list of games. List pages tend to be exactly that, a list page. Typically articles would contain the content about the subject itself. It's not terribly lengthy and if you feel strongly about the value it adds to the page, it's probably okay. Ideally other editors chime in but since the talks pages have less than 10 views in the past month, it'll likely be a while before we get any further feedback. Expandinglight5 (talk) 03:29, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Seems odd to be a featured article considering it's a list article and is poorly cited. There are only 15 references for over 200 entries. A lot has changed on Wikipedia since it was awarded its status in 2014 and the Sega CD page should probably be reevaulated for its status.Expandinglight5 (talk) 03:41, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Can u point to me a perfect video game list because they are only 4 that are featured Sega CD, 32X, N64, and Genesis. So basically just trim down the information and just remove stuff like in 32X remove the stuff about certain games like IGN retrospective of Star Wars Arcade etc.? NakhlaMan (talk) 03:52, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Take a look at what I done to various lists. NakhlaMan (talk) 04:28, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good. Expandinglight5 (talk) 05:30, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I am going to try to copy this format for all other video game lists. NakhlaMan (talk) 06:24, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well I did what u said and well now some of it got it reverted so do you agree or not? Also look at my Virtual Boy list. NakhlaMan (talk) 01:35, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You should speak with the editors on the talk page for the virtual boy. You should at minimum put the intro sentence to the correct WP format as previously discussed for the Sega Saturn page. As for the misc information, while I don't think it belongs on a list page, there's no formalized policy. Expandinglight5 (talk) 05:10, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I updated the intro sentence per WP style guide for the Virtual Boy list page. There's no consensus on list pages for content but you can bring it up for discussion in the appropriate style guide forums. Expandinglight5 (talk) 23:06, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
