Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on October 7, 2011.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that 293 Major League Baseball players have hit for the cycle, most recently Pablo Sandoval (pictured)?

Data inconsistency[edit]

This article says that there have been 293 cycles in history, while Hitting for the cycle says 294. As an encyclopedia, Wikipedia can't afford to be inconsistent. Can someone please rectify this. Perhaps, to avoid a similar problem in the future (since the list continues to grow), the text should say something like "As of 2012, cycles have occurred N times ...". Thanks, Truthanado (talk) 18:41, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed removal of redundant publisher information[edit]

A number of citations in this article unnecessarily include the publisher for periodicals and websites that have their own Wikipedia article. This information has no value to anyone wanting to check or track down references. For example, publisher=Washington Post Company for references to The Washington Post, or publisher=MLB Advanced Media for references to Baseball-Reference.com, only make the article longer - significantly longer when repeated many times - without adding anything useful. Therefore I plan to upgrade the article's citations to remove all such redundant publisher info, bringing them into line with the recommended use of the cite template (see Template:Citation#Publisher). Please raise any questions here or on my talk page. Colonies Chris (talk) 21:38, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Need to add Mike Trout[edit]

I couldn't figure out the formatting. Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim hit for the cycle May 21, 2013. Hopefully someone can add this.POMonkey (talk) 04:58, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

He was already on the page by the time you posted this comment. Green-eyed girl (Talk · Contribs) 01:56, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Updates to team chart[edit]

If anyone cares, I dug into the data[1] and corrected these errors to the cycles-by-team table:

Cycles for

  • changed the old Philly A's of the NL/pre-NL to the A's of the American Association (wrong team listed)
    • subtracted 4 from the Oakland A's line (these belong to the A's of the AA)
  • added 1 to the Rangers (Senators had one)
  • subtracted 4 fom the Louisville Colonels

Cycles allowed

  • subtracted 1 from the Cardinals, Metropolitans (AA)
  • subtracted 2 from the Oakland A's, added two to the A's of the American Association
  • added 1 to the Giants, Twins, Cubs, Mariners, Rockies
  • added 4 to the Louisville Colonels

I guess we haven't been in the habit of updating this table properly with each cycle. It should be up to date now with the Astros/Mariners cycle of July 19. Woodshed (talk) 10:10, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Detailed cycles-by-team table[edit]

The below table tracks the detail of cycles hit, and cycles allowed. Each MLB cycle should be listed twice—once in the Hit column and once in the Allowed column—using its number per the list on the main page (e.g. Oyster Burns' cycle is number 30). This allows checking the totals on the main page for accuracy, and correcting errors. Current teams names are in bold.

Houston Astros[edit]

As of the year 2013 the Houston Astros are now in the American League. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.237.34.211 (talk) 12:45, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Accomplishment or Statistical Oddity?[edit]

Is hitting for the cycle really that rare? Is it more a statistical oddity than an accomplishment? If you count players who have hit for the cycle or better (i.e. single-double-homer-homer) then you'll see that it's not that rare. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 148.126.100.82 (talk) 15:49, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's both an accomplishment and statistical oddity. There have been as many cycles as no-hitters. But batters getting 4 hits in a game isn't that rare so it is kind of lucky to get a single, double, triple and homerun whereas it's not easy for a pitcher to throw a no-hitter. Therefore I think it's overrated. But baseball fans seem to enjoy this statistical quirk and MLB considers it a "rare feat". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:B:BE80:D:141E:A2A5:E603:39A6 (talk) 00:56, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
