Another pendulum

I just wanted to say that we have a foucault pendulum in my university: Faculty of Natural and Exact Sciences, University of Buenos Aires. It's located in: Ground Flour of the 2nd Block, Ciudad Universitaria, Buenos Aires, Argentina. There are some pictures and a short description of it here.--Pfc432 03:32, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Turkey

University of Arizona

The stated period of this pendulum seems very short for the length. I make it just over 13 seconds, not the 9.4 seconds quoted. SpinningSpark 15:23, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

I make it nearly 14 seconds. Perhaps there is a gravitational anomaly in Arizona? Or perhaps it is a compound pendulum with an aluminium bob and a platinum rod? More likely is that Spinningspark is correct in suspecting that the quoted figures are incorrect. Could someone in Arizona go and measure? Dbfirs 17:38, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

The point that SpinningSpark correctly made is that it is almost impossible for a 160-foot pendulum to have a period of 9.4 seconds. If you can confirm the period, then perhaps the quoted length is wrong. Could someone please check? Dbfirs 00:18, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
I've been in touch with ASU, and the figures they provided were: Cable length is 70.5 feet (21.5 m). Weight of pendulum 238 lbs. (108 kg). Period of swing is 9.3 second. I've put these figures in the table - they sound more convincing. Dbfirs 07:41, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Nonexistent pendulum

The pendulum at Foothill College no longer exists. I have removed it from the list DrAstro (talk) 20:10, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Naval Postgraduate School?

I thought there was a Foucault pendulum in a building at the Naval Postgraduate School, in the elevator lobby of one building (and perhaps using an empty shaft). A2Kafir (and...?) 04:33, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Long Beach, CA

Added the pendulum in the Sunnyside Mausoleum, now Forest Lawn, to the list. It's been there for at least 30-40 years and most likely 60-80 years. Buffalo, NY

Plural

Since the standard plural of pendulum is pendulums (OED), and pendula is a rare form coined in the seventeenth century (along with the use of pendulum as a noun), should we not re-name this article List of Foucault pendulums? Dbfirs 12:49, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

I've put the situation back to the way it has been since 2008 (after a move on May 10th). I'm surprised that so many Physics textbooks use the plural "pendula". This would be correct if "pendulum" were a second declension Latin noun, but it isn't, and never was. Most dictionaries on both sides of the Atlantic give "pendulums" as the correct plural. Ukraine
