Where is Eton College?[edit]

Eton College is listed under Buckinghamshire, not Berkshire. Is this a mistake, or has the school or the county boundary moved? Verbcatcher (talk) 01:26, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It is in Berkshire; it was in Buckinghamshire. The county boundary changed when, under Schedule 1 of the Local Government Act 1972, Eton was moved into Berkshire from 1 April 1974. Given that this article is primarily about dates of foundation, it seems reasonable to refer to which county the school was in when founded. So, for example, Abingdon was in Berkshire when the school was founded, but is today in Oxfordshire. However, this practice does not seem to have been applied consistently here, as Ely was a separate administrative county from Cambridgeshire before 1965, and the divison between London and Middlesex here appears to follow postal districts, not local government boundaries. London[edit]

In his recent edit, User:Jgrantduff gave the edit summary "(→‎London: i have completed this section, is that OK?)", which I take to be a request to review the London section of the list. Here are my comments on this section. I am commenting on the current content, not specifically on the changes recently made by Jgrantduff.

  • Allhallows Barking Grammar School
No source for the content in the Comments field. This is not in the cited "Commissioners" source.
The cited "Commissioners" source gives the foundation date as 1686, not 1689.
  • Charterhouse School
"on the site of the old Carthusian Priory" is not in the cited "Commissioners" source. This claim is also in the Charterhouse School article and is almost certainly correct, but no source seems to be cited there.
The 1349 date in the Foundation field contradicts the comments, and is probably wrong.
  • Christ's Hospital School
No source for "Bridewell" or "Saint Thomas the Apostle". These are not mentioned in the Christ's Hospital article. Why is "Grey Friars" two words? This conflicts with the article on the school and looks archaic. No source for "the cloisters".
We should say that the school relocated to Horsham, with a date for this if we can find it, and either give a citation for this or tag it as {{Citation needed}}.
  • Mercers' Chapel Grammar School
No source for the Other names text. "Saint Thomas of Acons" could be a misreading of "St Thomas of Acre" – the Mercers' School article says that the school was built on the land of the Hospital of St Thomas of Acre.
Foundation by Henry VI (in 1447) is not in the cited "Commissioners" source. The Mercers' School article gives 1447 as a possible foundation date without mentioning Henry VI. The "Commissioners" source and the Mercers' School article both give the foundation as 1542 by Henry VIII. We should use this date and founder unless they are contradicted by a better source.
We should say that the school closed in 1959, citing the source given in Mercers' School.
  • Merchant Taylors' School
The cited "Commissioners" source gives the foundation date as 1561 by "R. Hills and other members of the Merchant Taylors company". This agrees with Merchant Taylors' School, Northwood article.
We should say that the school relocated to Northwood in 1933, and either give a citation for this or tag it as {{Citation needed}}.
  • St Paul's School, London
The cited "Commissioners" source gives the foundation date as 1510 by Dean Colet, and that the school was "under the Mercers' Company". The St Paul's School, London article gives the foundation date as 1509 by John Colet, without citing a source. We should say 1510 by John Colet.
We should say that the school moved to Barnes, London in 1968, either citing a source or tagging it with {{Citation needed}}.
  • Westminster School
The cited "Commissioners" source gives the foundation date as "156(" by Queen Elizabeth, and that it is attached to the "Collegiate Church of Westminster" (i.e. Westminster Abbey). The Westminster School article gives 1560 and this founder along with other dates and founders.
The alternative name "Westminster College" is not in the cited source, but "St. Peter's College" is.

I propose that we add a References column to the right side of the table and move all the citations there. This is because the citations (most often of the "Report of the Commissioners" book) often relate to the entire row. I would add {{Citation needed}} to any text that does not originate from a cited source. Such tags should not be taken personally, or as a demand for action.
