Novels

This page contains all the novels of DragonLance, but which ones are books, and which ones are the others? I think I have read most of the books, and yet I don't recognise most of the things in that list. Can anyone can please add to each novel what it is? Missing two books

I've noticed that two books are missing, "Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home", and "More Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home". Would they be needed to be placed in here?ddcc 03:40, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Series

Are titles grouped under the same heading in a series? Would they have to be read in order from the first to last under the header in order to understand?DoomsDay349 21:43, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes, titles are grouped by series, and chronologically (in real life) ordered. Usually that is the order in which you need to read them. -- ReyBrujo 23:40, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Reformating the list.

First, is there a guideline that shows a "preferred" format of the books in these lists? I couldn’t find one if there is. If there is not, and I don't see any objections in a few days I'm going forward with re-formatting. The format I plan on using will be like follows:

• Title (Date (Not-linked as I see it as a distraction), Author(s), (ISBN 111111111), Notes, if applicable

Mostly all that will be a noticeable change is I'll add all the ISBN numbers I can find, remove the links from dates, and link all authors. Zvar 01:54, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

The guidelines are here. Which ISBN will you use? The first edition? The latest? Will you create two entries if a book had had two reprints? And you can't link all the authors if you have already linked the author once in the current "page". As for the date, the wikilinks could be removed, yes. -- ReyBrujo 03:05, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the answers. Gives me a guideline. :) Got a reference for only link the authors once? I'm not trying to be argumentative, and it does sound good, but I plan on doing similar re-formatting for other book list too and would like the reference. As for the ISBN, just one entry per title, and if there are multiple ISBN's that's what individual wiki pages for the novels are for. As for which edition, the first one I find (likely from Amazon, but if not there wherever I can find it). For the link only once, it is the guide style that tells you to only make links that are relevant to the context. More specifically:

Avoid duplicate links on a page. Redundant links clutter up the page and make future maintenance harder. However, link the first occurrence of a term, and always link when directing to a page for more information, e.g. "Relevant background can be found in Fourier series". It is not uncommon to repeat a link that had last appeared much earlier in the article, but there's hardly ever a reason to link the same term twice in the same section.

Fine enough. Note that I had to correct the ISBN for The Lioness (in Wizards.com site the ISBN is incorrect, they are showing the one for Conundrum, I have both books here.) It seems you will have to check at Amazon every ISBN you add just in case they are wrong. I had thought about creating a table, like:

But I was never sure about that. I don't think there are that many novels created, so most titles would redirect to wrong articles if they are blue. -- ReyBrujo 02:02, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

The table I'm not over fond of myself. It's ok, but I like the bullet lists better. As for the person that red-linked all the titles, should we really do that? In my mind in doesn’t need to be wiki linked until there is an article for them. I'd think different if 9/10ths wasn't red when wiki linked. -- Zvar 20:16, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

I am not sure if we should wikilink everything or just the created articles. The bad thing is that we have a lot of red links. The good thing is that we will be aware of every novel that is added, and would prevent having two or three articles about the same book. However, since there aren't that many contributing to Dragonlance, I don't think we will be having this last problem. -- ReyBrujo 23:32, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

Ok, just did my update. All ISBN's verified by mel.org or Amazon when not found there. I'm actually suprised at the number of incorrect ISBN's on Wizard's site. Probably about 10 or so. the original trilogy

It took me a while to figure out which were the original three books. Wouldn't it make sense to point them out? Or is that not very significant? -Freekee 00:13, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

I believe it is possible to create a section with the trunk (Chronicles, Legends, Second Generation, Summer Flame, War of Souls), and then another section with all the other series. -- ReyBrujo 01:49, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

Names?

Ive never understood the reason behind the titles of the War of Souls novels(besides 'Lost Star'), and i was wondering if anyone else did. The books in question are 'Dragons of a Fallen Sun' and 'Dragons of a Vanished Moon'. Thanks. (11987 22:38, 18 June 2006 (UTC))

SPOILERS: That would be an interesting addition to the article about the trilogy. I believe the Dragons of a Vanished Moon gets its name as a fact that the white moon disappears at the end of the third novel. As for Fallen Sun, I believe it is referring to the fact that a new problematic era is arriving (the same as Autumn Twilight refers twice to the idea that the worst is coming (Autumn, preparing for the worst in winter, and Twilight, preparing for the night)). Chronological Order?

Has anyone ever tried to list the books in chronological order as in starting with the books that deal with earliest known Krynn history and putting them in order? For example, The Elven Nations trilogy takes place 2,000 years before Chronicles so they would come first, then maybe The Legend of Huma and then Kaz the Minotaur, etc. I think it would be an interesting way to read the books; almost like looking into one of Astinus's history books. --70.190.156.191 02:11, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

At least *some* sort of chronological order (either by publication order or by internal chronology) for the series headings would make an awful lot of sense, which alphabetical really doesn't. You may find some chronological references here (http://www.dl3e.com/products/reading.aspx), and some personal indications on the order of reading.

I think this list/article would benefit from some sort of graphical timeline. That way the bulleted list can remain in its current order, but there would be a reference for which novels precede others. Missing articles

Why are we missing so many articles on so many books? We all read them, so it's kind of confusing why they don't have an article. ddcc 04:25, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Feel free to create other articles. I like picking incomplete ones and filling them until they are articles and not stubs. We could create all the articles, but they would look like Conundrum (book) or Dark Thane for months before someone fills them. I would suggest choosing one, and working on it until it is good enough for a casual user, then switch to another. -- ReyBrujo 04:51, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

I'd like to help

Rey, it seems like you're the unofficial "ringleader" of Dragonlance on Wikipedia so I'll just ask you this:

I'm reading (and in most cases REreading) the Dragonlance books. I would love to help out by submitting articles on the books as I read them, however, I'm pretty weak when it comes to making the page look professional (ie: loading images, linking sources, etc.). Is it possible that I could put articles up, then contact you in hopes that you might be able to clean them up for me? The rest of us help too you know. All you have to do is add a link to the article in List of Dragonlance Novels, then we'll catch the addition and clean it up. Also you should add the articles into the proper category.ddcc 21:11, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Indeed, everyone here does something to make the Dragonlance articles better. I am just one of the oldest helping here, knowing about policies and guidelines as well. If an article already exists, but is a stub (very small), just include the information in the page itself. If the article does not exist, and you are willing to create it, just create it. If you have doubts about how to name the article, just ask or follow the information at the naming guidelines. If the article already exists, just add to it. Even without format, and add a {{wikify-date|July 2006}} tag (or the correct month). If you are unsure, you can just post the text in the talk page as suggestion. Darkness and Light is up

Hey guys I just finished doing an article for Darkness and Light. Please feel free to clean it up, add things, remove, edit, whatever you think will make it better! If it's okay with everyone, I can do all the Preludes (except for the ones already done) since those are the ones I'm currently (re)reading. I haven't read them since high school and I'm 32 now, so it's almost like I'm reading them again for the first time.

Oh and by the way, I won't bug you guys with an entry on the Discussion Page every time I do an article. I just wanted to let you know that the first one was up and ask you to clean this one up along with the other ones I do. I hope eventually I'll learn how to clean my own stuff up after watching you guys do it for a while. --Soulforge19 09:21, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

When you create an article, see if you can add it to User:ReyBrujo/Base/Dragonlance. This is a list of all the Dragonlance articles that are up and their status, and helps keeping track of stuff. Thanks for helping us! -- ReyBrujo 13:05, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

I can do that, I just didn't want to say too much about the book and spoil it for anyone who hasn't yet read it. Additionally, I really don't like the "This article is a stub" tag on the Darkness and Light page. By expanding it, it won't be a stub anymore, but still, you're giving way too much information about the book. What can we (I) do about that? DDC, thanks for the info box on it though! Remaking list

Shouldn't the items in the list be changed in to the {{cite book}} format so that it looks better, and that if blocks of refrences need to be added to an article, they can just be copied from here? ddcc 21:28, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Dragons of Autumn Twilight first published?

This article lists Dragons of Autumn Twilight (April 1984), but if you follow the link to the book's article the infobox says "Released November, 1984". Does anyone know which is correct? - 218.185.72.174 22:28, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

order of novels

List format

I propose this list be completely reformatted to use the {{Book list}} template. This would provide more info on each book than just title/ISBN, and would facilitate merging in many of the stubs for these novels here without any real loss of info as the series template includes sections for summaries. It would also be particularly great here because of the differing authors, etc. and probably publishers. It also, of course, needs a much better lead.
