What happened to Bodmin Crown Court? It appears to have function up to 1988. Replaced with what? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:23C5:4508:BE00:EC12:77E0:CB1D:6FC9 (talk) 12:32, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Title[edit]

The title of this article is inaccurate, as there is only one Crown Court in England and Wales, which sits in multiple venues. I'd accordingly propose moving the page to List of venues of the Crown Court of England and Wales or something similar. Does anyone else have any thoughts? --Harris (talk) 13:07, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair point; moved to a slightly less wordy version of your suggestion. BencherliteTalk 13:21, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some queries[edit]

Is there a definitive reference as to which places are considered substantive Crown Court venues? For instance, we list Newport as Newport Crown Court, despite the fact that it appears to be Cardiff Crown Court sitting at Newport, but we don't list Wimbledon (Kingston upon Thames Crown Court sitting at Wimbledon), Huntingdon (Peterborough Crown Court sitting at Huntingdon), Brighton or Hove (Lewes Crown Court sitting at Brighton or Hove) or Hereford (Worcester Crown Court sitting at Hereford, which even has the Recorder of Hereford).

And what is the status of these sittings? If "Peterborough Crown Court" is in fact "the Crown Court sitting at Peterborough", then is the sitting at Huntingdon "the Crown Court sitting at Peterborough sitting at Huntingdon"?

Finally, when Mr Justice Treacy heard the Heathrow robbery case without a jury, it was listed as "the Central Criminal Court sitting at the Royal Courts of Justice". But section 8(3) of the Senior Courts Act 1981 provides that "When the Crown Court sits in the City of London it shall be known as the Central Criminal Court" - how can he have been sitting in the Central Criminal Court when the RCJ isn't in the City of London? I wrote the first draft of this list some time ago, so my recollection for why some courts and not others are listed is hazy. I think I largely worked from this list where the Government said in 2007 that there were 91 venues. But, as you point out, there are oddities and I ought to look through it. A Google-cached version of the HMCS page about the Crown Court (I can't get the HMCS site at the moment, for some reason) says that there are 77 venues, and by the time you take out the Newport/Cardiff, Swansea/Haverfordwest/Carmarthen, Mold/Caernarfon/Dolgellau/Welshpool and similar "sub-"court duplications, that might be about the right number.
As for the terminology, I'm not sure, but I've never seen anything saying "the Crown Court sitting at Cardiff sitting at Newport" or similar (the use of two "sitting"s looks odd anyway). The court lists for Newport are headed "The Crown Court / at Cardiff / Daily List for Tuesday 29 March 2011 at The Law Courts, Faulkner Road, Newport" etc. There are various examples of "Newport Crown Court" in BAILII transcripts, FWIW. Perhaps it's best thought of as the Crown Court sitting at Cardiff, but listed for hearing at a building in Newport that happens to be called / referred to as Newport Crown Court.
The Treacy question might just be an administrative thing, on the basis that all case papers have to be processed by one particular court within the crown court system, and that was a CCC case, albeit that the sitting took place just "over the border" in Westminster.
Perhaps I ought to work on this list again, and get it up to FL status, like the County Court list... BencherliteTalk 16:04, 28 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There should at least be one reliable source - the Crown Court can only sit where directions from the Lord Chancellor under section 78(3) of the SCA permit it to sit. Those directions must be available somewhere. (I can't find them online. Perhaps a request to the MOJ would produce them?) Proteus (Talk) 22:11, 28 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Amersham facilities[edit]

According to HMCS, Crown Court facilities have been open in Amersham for a week or so now - [1] they're being considered as a 'satellite' to reduce the workload of Aylesbury CC. Unsure if this merits inclusion (it's not entirely clear if its being considered as an annex of the Aylesbury centre or as a seperate courthouse) but there you go anyway.
