  • Support. Unnecessary disambiguation, the proposed name already redirects there and is more concise obviously. Looks quite uncontroversial to me in fact. Andrewa (talk) 18:16, 25 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Although I don't see a strong need for this move, this was pretty common shorthand for Libya's full name at the time. It (rather than simply "Libya") was used even in contexts when other countries one-word names were used (see this image and Libya's name plaque at the UN). I agree with User:SnowFire's concerns about the fork and would support a remerge. —  AjaxSmack  03:52, 29 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Jamahiriya appears to be redundant in meaning with "Great Socialist People's". Jamahiriya may be an uncommon word, but not in the context of this topic. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 06:00, 29 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Country title/page needs clarification[edit]

This is the timeline of Libya's names under Gaddafi:

The current state of this article is one of confusion and ambiguity. The title says one name (which already refers to a different Libyan period), and the article lead section and infobox says another.

Either:

  • change the name to Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya and make the article about the state from 1986 to 2011
  • change the name to Libyan Arab Republic and make the article about the state from 1969–1977
(If either of the above, we must create other articles for the other state periods.)

Remove duplication[edit]

@Charles Essie:: There's really no discussion to have (although I meant to have a better edit summary - didn't notice it got dropped somehow). This should have been done immediately, and was mentioned in the move request above. This article is just a fork with the exact same content as the redirect target. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Libyan_Arab_Jamahiriya&diff=775270522&oldid=746313341 is the diff of the article being recreated without reason. It's just copy-paste content, and the changes since have been trivial. More generally, this SHOULDN'T exist as an article; the topic is really "Libya under Gaddafi" and not the rotating names he picked for the state. SnowFire (talk) 16:23, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The article still exists. All of the content in this article is at History_of_Libya_(1969–2011)#Libyan_Arab_Jamahiriya_(1977–2011) (which was just moved; was at History of Libya under Muammar Gaddafi before). @Srijanx22: - There's no need for AFD because there's nothing to be deleted here. Everything in the article you are restoring is on Wikipedia, at the very link this redirects to. What exactly are you trying to do here? Do you think this is a separate topic that should be split out, or something else? SnowFire (talk) 19:34, 13 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Libya under Gadafi included Arab Libyan and Great Jamahirirya. People need to know that this is not just "names he picked for the state". I am not alone and at least 3 other editors such as Syed Aashir, VolgaDnper1488 and Charles Essie also reverted your unilateral redirect thus you should better take this to WP:AFD but I can assure you that you will fail. Maybe that is why you are frequently redirecting instead of having a discussion. Srijanx22 (talk) 19:37, 13 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And if you read the history, you'll see that it was long-term editors other than me that originally redirected and merged the article several times, while it was random passerby that would restore the article each time. I am utterly baffled by this crowd. Why do you want the same content in two different places? You're not making an affirmative argument for why this is a good idea at all, and this article is a pure WP:CONTENTFORK as is. Readers can already learn about Gadaffi's Libya there. There's nothing holy about having a separate article dedicated to just this. SnowFire (talk) 22:02, 13 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't want to get involved in the whole dispute, but  Libya causes a broken double redirect, since it links to here, which until just now linked to History of Libya (1969–2011)#Libyan Arab Jamahiriya (1977–2011), which is currently a redirect to History of Libya under Muammar Gaddafi. I've fixed the broken double redirect, and I hope nobody has a problem with that. FDW777 (talk) 15:46, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
