Removed: An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, laid a wreath at this commemoration in 2006 in the year of the 80th anniversary of Fianna Fáil and the 90th year anniversary of the 1916 rising, in which he announced, along with Minister for Environment, Heritage and local government, Dick Roche, that 16 Moore street, Dublin, the last post to surrender during the rising, will be listed as a protected building.

Mellowes Quay[edit]

Giuliolopez, you have removed Mellowes Quay saying that it is named after the bridge; but the bridge was named after the man. I thought that a referenced entry could only be removed after discussion on an article's talk page? Is having a barracks named after you better then a block of flats?86.42.199.26 (talk) 10:37, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi 86.42.199.26. Quite simply, the reference provided didn't support the assertion in a few areas. Firstly, the developer's brochure on the linked site explicitly states that the "name Mellowes Quay is taken from nearby Mellowes Bridge".[1] And so, as stated, the assertion that the flats are named after the man is not strictly or directly accurate. It is a secondary association at best. Secondly, the sentence also included commentary, speculation and POV describing your assertion that the flats are "expensive" and that naming them after Mellows was somehow surprising as a result. As stated, the relationship to Mellows is by association/proximity to a bridge which *is* explicitly named after him. Rather than by direct association. And so, just about everything that followed was "interpretative". That the flats are "expensive" is similarly unsupported by reference and relative/POV. And that Mellows' association with a property development is somehow "weird" represents uncited personal opinion. In short: providing a link is not the same as providing a "valid reference". Cheers. Rory O'C in the Four Courts as late as June?[edit]

"In June 1922, he and fellow republicans Rory O'Connor, Joe McKelvey and Richard Barrett, (among others) entered the Four Courts, which had been occupied by anti-Treaty forces since April. His father[edit]

In one part of the article his father is referred to as a British officer, but elsewhere he is described as Sergeant Mellows. While it is true that a sergeant is a non-commissioned officer (NCO), in the British Army of the time - and even today - there is a great difference in the social implications of describing somebody as an officer and describing somebody as an NCO. At that time it was most unusual in the BA for NCOs to be given a commission. Could somebody clarify if Mellows' father was one of these rare exceptions. If not, it would be better to describe him as an NCO (or non-commissioned officer) - as indeed he must have been at the time of Mellows' birth since he was a sergeant when the family moved to Dublin. --Mia-etol (talk) 07:28, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Education[edit]

I know of no Wellington Barracks in Cork. Mellows lived at St. Joseph's Terrace on the Ballyhooly Road, Cork for a time (1901 census has him as "William Joe" but aged 8,not 6 ^[1]. Ballyhooly Road is very close to the present day Collins Barracks, Cork (then known as Victoria Barracks). It is more likely that he was educated there. "executed" or "murdered"[edit]

This article make reference to the execution of Liam Mellows (along with three others) as a reprisal for the assassination of TD Seán Hales. He certainly was killed, but was he executed? I think it would be helpful to have citations to the court process that resulted in an execution order. I think that he should be more correctly described as "summarily executed".
