First month of US sales[edit]

There is a bit of small scale edit-warring about whether the 'North American' section should mention that the CT 200h was the third best selling hybrid in the US in its first month of sales. Personally, I think that is a damn good achievement for its first month but I won't cry if it is either in or out of this article. The two opponents (OSX and Mariordo) are editors that I normally trust and I value both of their opinions - even when they're opinions differ.

However, the start of US sales is definitely worthy of being mentioned and probably should be shifted from the lead to the 'North American' section. Stepho (talk) 08:36, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I thought we unanimously decided (seven support, zero oppose) that monthly sales figures are not notable (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Automobiles/Archive 27#Monthly sales figures). As I said before, being the "third most sold hybrid [in one] month" in one market is also not particularly important in the car's broad context. Third place is not first, and when all other non-hybrid vehicles are included, its position would decrease further.

Sales are high for a few reasons (and rightly so, seems like a great car). One, it's a Lexus and it's not very expensive. Secondly, it is a hybrid which is important with talk of fuel prices escalating due to the current issues in Libya et al. Thirdly, it's a just-released model in a segment that Lexus has yet to compete in yet.

For the record, the CT 200h went on sale in Australia last month as well, and Lexus managed to shift 223 units in a country with a population 8 percent of the US's (where 2,199 were sold). What about other markets? What about next month? The automobiles WikiProject agreed that only yearly sales should be mentioned and an individual month should only be brought up if the figure is particularly outstanding relative to other months (i.e. sales tripled, et cetera). So let's wait until January 2012 when the yearly sales are released and include key markets (as outlined in the above linked discussion) in a table at the bottom of the page. I was hoping that Mariodo would chime in, so I guess I get to play devil's advocate :( The agreement was to not list tables of monthly figures but any month that had a notable amount could be mentioned. I guess the choice here is whether being third in its niche group in its first month is notable. For me, its border line - I wouldn't be inclinded to add it in but I also wouldn't be inclined to remove it if someone else put it in. As for Australia, I'd definitely add its start date with your reference. Whether we include the Australian sales number will probably depend on whether the US sales are agreed to be acceptable. If you want some more impressive numbers, I have those from Germany: Selling startet in February and in this first three month they sold 400 CT. All other Lexus models together (!) make about 100 per Month. --TheK (talk) 23:02, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
