Much to research in this fascinating subject[edit]

I have doubled the length of the article, mainly by adding some biographical details and references. The Alexander Kelly McClure blockquote at the end of the article was spot-on: whatever you may think of this rascal, the Hon. Mr. Levin was a fascinating figure. Surely he deserves an in-depth biography.

Some things I have not been able to verify, and accordingly have left out. E.g., his family's origins. I have seen him referred to as an "English Jew" and there is indeed a Lewis Levin Snr, born in London, and buried in Charleston SC, who is very likely his father; but I'm far from verifying the connection. Similarly, with a little more hard information one could connect Levin's career with other cultural and sectarian developments of the early 1840s. Charles Dickens, who visited Philadelphia in 1842, had just published his book about the Gordon Riots of 1780, Barnaby Rudge, so the idea of a violent and politicized anti-Catholicism would certainly have been in the air. What did Levin know and think about the Gordon Riots? Did he consider himself a latter-day Lord George Gordon?

And I wonder whether Levin's "insanity" was really no more than the "brain fever" so many of his contemporaries came down with, perhaps as a result of a lively youth.Sallieparker (talk) 21:13, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Link Correction[edit]

The "American Republican Party" originating in 1843 was not the same body as the Republican Party to which the link goes. I don't know how to redirect the erroneous link but it should link to the "Know Nothing" Wiki page at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Know_Nothing, and not the Republican Party page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.34.131.212 (talk) 01:41, 11 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Irish Catholics[edit]

Charles Lewis Levin proved to be correct about Irish Catholic immigrants. Yes, they fought in the Civil War, but they never loved the flag. They had their own agenda and took over by stealthy ethnic networking and having a huge birthrate 174.252.128.143 (talk) 17:16, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
