Improving the page[edit]

Where are the citations? "Some anthropologists?" Not good enough.

I have (again) removed the entirely incorrect section about sex among Lepchas. Having spent time in Lepcha areas and having Lepcha friends, I can confirm that Lepcha attitudes to sex are more or less the same as everyone else's.

The source that was given for the earlier, incorrect information is just summarizing statements from the book by Gorer (1967). Citing second-hand information from a source ~45 years old is not reliable for describing Lepcha sexual behaviours. Even in 1967, the book must have been odd and unreliable - certainly it is not a systematic study. Perhaps it more of as an insight into the mind of Gorer himself, than an insight into the Lepchas. As a further point, I would add it was written in a pre-Internet era. What would Gorer think of pedophiles making use of his ramblings (via Wikkipedia) to select the location of their potential victims? Fortunately, Lepchas do not encourage children to have sex; Lepchas do not have sex with children; and Lepchas do not engage in extramarital sex more than anyone else. Any 'sex tourist' ending up among Lepchas due to Gorer's ramblings will, I hope (and am sure), be disappointed, exposed and punished. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.169.53.134 (talk) 14:50, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In my above comment, I mentioned a 1967 date for Gorer's book. (This came from the online source dated 2004, which I removed from the Wikipedia article, along with incorrect information on Lepcha attitudes towards sex - for which it was cited.) But in fact, this 1967 edition is a reprint of a book first published in 1938.

Hence, the incorrect information on Lepcha attitudes to sex (which I removed from the Wikipedia article a few hours ago) came from Gorer's book - a source of low reliability, ~75 years old. This was spuriously given an air of being more recent, due to citation in the Wikipedia article of a 2004 online source (which quotes the 1967 reprint of the 1938 book).

No matter what their content, quotations from a book this old cannot be an appropriate guide to the sexual attitudes of the Lepcha, or any other, people. I - and others - have been correct to criticize and remove this content.

That the 75-year-old book - and other sources based on it - are wrong, is a separate matter. But this is another good reason to keep them out of this article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.169.53.134 (talk) 18:33, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The article claims there are four main populations of Lepcha, but then goes on to describe more than four. Wikipedia seems to be full of this kind of inconsistancy.
