The following comment was pasted from a private conversation we had with an electronics engineer. Since all the references are in Russian, I am seeking a knowledgeable person to assess the following argument.

"The wiki page statement that the mobile handset weighing 70 gms had a range of 80km. That is impossible because: 1) Earths curvature 2) size of antenna 3) Power requirements . The earth's curvature imposes a limit on distance of a straight line communications link, irrespective the radiated power. Size of antenna is dictated by frequency, radiated power and directionality. Frequencies below 20Mhz can be reflected by the ionosphere and hence can be recieved over the horizon, but with highly variable time dependent quality. However the antenna size and power for transmission becomes very large. Apart from these constraints making a hand held for 80km range impossible, there is also massive massive leakageas of transmission power into ones own reciever that would cause the reciever to fail, most likely by exploding. These remain unsolved problems even today, therefore can be rejected as a probable method to achieve 80km with a hand held weighing several kgs, never mind 70gms. This means that one has to use higher frequencies. The higher the frequency the higher the radiated power requirements and the battery size because of atmospheric attenuation. However antenna size drops as frequency increases making a handheld size achievable for small distances. But we now run into earths curvature as the travel path for such frequencies is a straight line. And we run into power issues as we try to increase the distance. Around 130Mhz would be optimal for distance, atmospheric attenuation, power etc. At 130Mhz we have a slew of modern transceivers with power rating of 5 w for hand held and 20W and above for compact portable, but not hand held. We can therefore have a very good estimate of size, distance, power etc based on modern semiconductor tech."
