Forty Martyrs of Sebaste[edit]

How do we know that The Forty came from Legio XII Fulminata? Is this recorded anywhere in a credible source or is this speculation? Aramgar 21:17, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Translation[edit]

From a footnote: IMP DOMITIANO CAESARE AVG GERMANICO LVCIVS IVLIVS MAXIMVS LEGIONIS XII FVL, which an editor translated as "To Emperor Domitian etc. etc." But the emperor's name is ablative, so shouldn't this mean "during the imperial reign of Domitian etc."? Latin Translation of Fulminata[edit]

"Lightning-Struck" does not convey the Latin meaning of fulminata, which is better translated as "carrying the lightning bolt". The Legion was not struck by lightning, it struck its opponents as if it were armed with lightning.
