Christian beliefs[edit]

I am concerned that the wording "their Christian beliefs" is a bit unclear about that the stress is on "their" (their personal specific beliefs), while there are ozher Christians who don't believe the same, and would not have declined the commission. Article was on DYK with false statements in it[edit]

I have corrected the false statements that the Equalities Commission spending was criticised by the "Northern Irish media" and that it spent 500,000 pounds. What the cited article from the Belfast Telegraph actually said was "Around £500,000 has been spent to date on the landmark case - £250,000 by the Christian Institute to fund the McArthurs' appeal and a further £250,000 spent by the Equality Commission to advocate for Mr Lee."

There was no implicit statement that the Belfast Telegraph itself, or any other media organisation, was making the criticism. There was also a claim that "numerous" political parties "hailed" the Supreme Court's decision, but only the DUP is mention in the ref's and the word "hailed" is not used - that is an editor's bias showing.

I have also added that the case is now being taken to the European Court of Human Rights, and I added the statement, reported in the cited article, but omitted in this wikipedia article, that the Commission's spending was over a 4 and a half year period.

I have put in a fuller quote from Peter Tatchell, as the article implied he supported the Ashers' stance about the cake, when he didn't really. He thought the court was wrong because he thought Lee was not discriminated on grounds of sexual orientation or political opinion. "I profoundly disagree with Ashers’ opposition to same-sex love and marriage, and support protests against them. They claim to be Christians, yet Jesus never once condemned homosexuality, and discrimination is not a Christian value. Ashers’ religious justifications are, to my mind, theologically unsound...However, the [county] court erred by ruling that Lee was discriminated against because of his sexual orientation and political opinions."

I've left the quote from Patrick Stewart, although why it is there is questionable - he was not involved in the case or any of the support campaigns on either side, and the opinions of an actor have no bearing on the legal proceedings or judgment.
