My father, Fred J. Buchholtz, sailed aboard the LAWHILL as second mate in 1909-1911. The ship left New York on October 10th, 1909, and first sailed to the Solomons via the Cape of Good Hope. From there, she went on to DaNang, Haiphong, Manilla, Hong Kong, Samoa, and returned to New York via Cape Horn, arriving on January 21st, 1911. The entire voyage was about 45,000 miles long. I have a wonderful set of glass slides he made of this voyage, which are still in remarkably good shape. Grave of Arthur Soderlund, former master of the Lawhill[edit]

I visited the island Tristan da Cunha on 15 April 2006 with the Barque "Europa". The weather was favourable so we could make a landing. On my walk over the island, I visited the graveyard. I found there the grave of Captain Arthur Soderlund, for many years Master of the 4-mast barque "Lawhill". Captain Soderlund died by a tragic accident on board the fishing vessel "Frances Repetto" the 15th of May 1954. The fishing vessel was owned by the Tristan Development Company from Cape Town. In 1959 I was 3rd officer on board the "Straat Mozambique" when we rescued the "Frances Repetto" in the South Atlantic with motor damage on her way from Tristan da Cunha to Cape Town; we towed the vessel to Cape Town.
