Lalmonirhat Airport used during the Second World War by the allied forces has been lying neglected for 66 years, with no inbound or outbound flight operated ever since. Lalmonirhat Airport was established during the British rule in 1943 on 1166.68 acres of land in Mahendranagar-Harati area under Sadar upazila. During the Second World War, the allied forces used the airport for smooth takeoff and landing of flights at the airport. After the war ended in 1945, the usage of the port came to an abrupt halt. Although the airport resumed its operation on a small scale in 1958, it was stopped again in 1968 for lack of adequate passengers. Later on, a decision was taken to make the airport an airbase of Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) in 1972. Afterwards, it was handed over to the air force in 1982. Since then, BAF has been used the disused airport for training purpose side by side its agriculture project. BAF sources of a newspaper said that the airport is suitable for safe touchdown and takeoff of helicopters and small planes. Jumbo planes could fly from and land on the tarmac easily if essential repairs were carried out. (Information Collected by Apurba M Rahman)
