Wikipedia makes It almost impossible to publish YouTube links. That's frustrating when there's something over there so specifically illuminating to an article like this, though I do understand the reasons for the general ban.

If there are certain exquisite pleasures I take from this world which defy easy paraphrase, one must be the signature speak-singing delivery of Kurt Gerron (performed here over a deliciously-nuanced piano accompaniment, which gives us the song's actual melody). To my mind, this track epitomizes the sensibility not only of the performer, but of that whole prescient 'Cabaret'/Weimar/Berlin era, and does so without our even necessarily having to understand the words (though an online translation can be easily found).

So go to YouTube, search for "Nachtgespenst Kurt Gerron", turn out the lights ("but only if you dare, my dear"), and listen.
