Tetrachloromethane[edit]

Back in the late '60s when butterfly collecting was still thought to be acceptable as a pastime for children, we used Tetrachloromethane (aka Carbon tetrachloride) to make the "stinker" jars. Cotton wool on the bottom, a disk of blotting paper on top of that and soak the cotton wool in CCl4. We also had some mysterious stuff called "relaxing fluid" which was used to prepare the butterflies for mounting. Sorry, no references other than my late teacher!
