Comment[edit]

--94.101.168.68 (talk) 14:53, 16 September 2014 (UTC)This store is notable for being one of the original retail chains in Essex and was internationally known. Shopping visits by plane (into Southend airport) from the continent were done with Keddies the main draw right up until the late 60's.[reply]

Why is this page being deleted. Keddies were a foremost employer and internationally known retailer in Essex Davidstewartharvey (talk) 14:56, 16 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The reasons for the proposed deletion, are clearly stated on the article page:-
  • This article has no links to other Wikipedia articles.
  • This article is written like a personal reflection or opinion essay that states the Wikipedia editor's particular feelings about a topic, rather than the opinions of experts.
  • The topic of this article may not meet Wikipedia's general notability guideline.
  • This article is an orphan, as no other articles link to it. Please introduce links to this page from related articles; try the Find link tool for suggestions.
  • This article does not cite any references or sources.
Unfortunately, User:94.101.168.68 has made addressing these problems more difficult, as the page has been protected because the proposed deletion tag was removed, without addressing the problems.
The first two points:- Links to other articles and personal opinion, can easily be addressed
I would concentrate on providing references from Independant Reliable Sources - presumably you got your information from somewhere - hopefully more than one source - so this should be an easy start. You need to cite extensive coverage in books, magazines and newspapers, which would also prove the notability - please see WP:42 for an overview.
The proposer has not opted for a "speedy deletion" - which can happen within an hour or so, so you have until 22 September, to find your sources, but don't leave it until the last minute - as someone needs to include them in the article. Arjayay (talk) 17:09, 16 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Article should not have been re-prodded[edit]

Having looked at this further, I am not sure why the prod was replaced, nor why the article was semi-protected.
The tag placed on the article clearly states:-

You may remove this message if you improve the article or otherwise object to deletion for any reason. Although not required, you are encouraged to explain why you object to the deletion, either in your edit summary or on the talk page. If this template is removed, do not replace it.

So, an editor objected to the deletion and removed the message, which, as it states, they are fully entitled to do.
They did not leave a message. but as is also stated, this is not required.
However, contrary to the instructions in bold, the template was replaced, which it should not have been.
Furthermore, the article was then semi-protected, making it far more difficult for IPs and other non-autoconfirmed editors, to improve the article.

I have, however, addressed the main problems and removed the prod - although the article could do with more references - the hay-days of Keddies were 1934-1974 - well before the internet, so we need "dead-tree" references and some copyright-free photos. - Arjayay (talk) 12:36, 21 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The information that Keddies once had a store in Romford needs to be added - this has come from local people I have spoken to the only source on the internet is http://www.shrimperzone.com/vb/archive/index.php/t-53836.html.

Also, via my Grandfather he was told by Francis Edwin, who had worked as a butcher in Supasave, that the shopping trolley made its first appearence in the UK at Supasave, after the Keddies brothers brought them back along from a trip to New York in 1959 along with the supermarket idea. 94.101.168.68 (talk) 09:08, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Partly done: I have added the Romford store (I remember it) - but we still need a reliable source for that - Shrimperzone is user-contributed, so is not deemed reliable. Would a local library have copies of old newspapers? Unfortunately, personal recollections are never acceptable, as they are not only unreliable, they cannot be verified - Arjayay (talk) 16:12, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Murray David Maitland Keddie, better known as David Keddie - Owner of Keddies, was the High Sheriff of Essex in 1986. Maitland House was named after his middle name[1] Davidstewartharvey (talk) 09:55, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"Building today" needs to be more specific[edit]

Keddies had more than one building. The section needs to be more clear about what it's talking about. --James Pain (talk) 10:38, 16 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Keddies was in the Guinness book of Records![edit]

It appears that Keddies partly appeared in the Guinness Book of Records in 1984: Tony Sprackling , 24 , waited for 412 hours ( 17 days 4 hours ) outside Keddies , Queen St , Colchester , Eng , from Dec 10 - Dec 27 , 1984. His sofa bed was reduced from £ 399 ( $ 480 ) to £ 50 ( $ 60 ). Guinness Book of World Records 1986, ISBN:9780553254549 Page=338.Davidstewartharvey (talk) 17:20, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Romford Store[edit]

I have now added a ref found regarding the Romford store from a publication of the time (regarding wine!). As to the location of the store, I have seen people have said it was on Market Place, but as per the blog Jane's London, she believed it could be accessed via the Quadrant Arcade. I think this may be true, though I have not found any pictures or documents to confirm the location. However when the building opened, the large store that occupied a karge part of the site was Hill & Steeles, a chain department store group owned by British Home Stores, as seen on this Havering Library Facebook Post [1] BHS during the 60s closed or made these stores into BHS, so it's likely to be the location. • Scrap the above, the store as per the ref I added to the article was at 30-36 Market Place. The King's head, which was part of the properties bought from Hammerson was at this address.Davidstewartharvey (talk) 20:12, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

KD Discount/Supa-save plus basildon and chelmsford[edit]

I had read that Keddies operated more than one Supa-Save but have not found any proof. I did find on [2] in the comments box that there was a KD Discount store in Hadleigh which was owned by Keddies. I can't find any other link. In addition in Key British Enterprises KBE · Volume 2 1988 it states that there were stores in Chelmsford and Basildon! I have no idea where these were or find any reference.Davidstewartharvey (talk) 13:51, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
