History[edit]

There is a gap in the history of just 650 years from 1207 to 1857. If some kind scholarly person or persons could fill it, it would be a great service! Seadowns (talk) 11:44, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Edits[edit]

Hi,

I agree that users should not vandalize this page. One of the branches of RBI is more appropriate. I am editing that. Also there is no citation for the line," The Hindi language spoken by people of kanpur is the purest form of Hindi." In fact having lived here and in lucknow, I know that is not true. Removing that line. Also Kanpur was the economic hub of UP. Now its Noida and Ghaziabad.Would like to proof read the article a bit too. Would do that later. Good work Bobby. --Satanicoutput (talk) 12:31, 28 March 2009 (UTC)--[reply]

/* Economy */ National Thermal Power Plant and Chakeri Airport are also important. JNV and KV are among important schools. Also there is internationally famous Green Park. Metro Railways is proposed for Kanpur. Sorry Am not on PC, so design decorate and ammend accordingly. :)

Hindi Creeping in, Mutiny, not indepedence war[edit]

This is the English wikipedia. Someone should amend the map to read Kanpur in English only, and not Hindi. Furthermore, I suspect we should call the war of 1857 what it is: a mutiny. Common knowledge dictates that the occurrences of 1857 were not a "war of independence". ~ kamil choudhury

Hi Kamil, It is not "Hindi creeping in" as you have tried to suggest. These are the names in local scripts. It is NOT just Hindi, if you could see and understand, there is Urdu label also. Furthermore, if you are really interested in knowing what the MUTINY or WAR should be called, please go through the relevant "article" or its "Talk" and join the debate there.

--Bobby Awasthi 06:15, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi all, wouldn't it be best if we just called it the "Indian Mutiny/War of Independence"? Also I think it would be good if we called the city Cawnpore for everything relating before 1949. After that we can call it Kanpur. Otherwise it'd be like the article on Roman Londinium - constantly referred to as London!

I would also say that the summary of the massacre of Cawnpore is extremely sanitised/biased and the role of the mutineers is played down. Inaccuracies include:

- use of word rebellion rather than mutiny, the majority of the soldiers were under British command, therefore it is a mutiny rather than a rebellion - it is not clear who fired the first shot during the incident at the river. - the rebels did not initially refuse to fire at the women and children in the Bibighar, they fired at least two volleys before they refused to continue firing - Not only were dismembered bodies thrown into the well, living women and children were too. The "Well of Cawnpore" became infamous in Victorian culture and should be referenced as such. - Furthermore the description mentions that Neill committed a series of "atrocities" but never references anything that the mutineers did as atrocious. It describes civilians caught in the area as "unfortunate" but not the women and children caught in the Bibighar

I am not saying that we should pass judgement on Nana Sahib, this is not the forum to do so, but all emotive language e.g. atrocities/unfortunate should either be applied to the victims of both sides or removed completed. Wikipedia's "Siege of Cawnpore" page is a more accurate summary of what occurred. The summary on this page is mutineer-apologist drivel.

Kanpur Co-ordinates[edit]

Hi, The Co-Ordinates mentioned for Kanpur are pretty out of place. They Should ideally be near/around: Latitude: 26°27'28.19"N Longitude: 80°19'4.29"E I have used Google Earth to verify the same. If some one has the exact co-ordiante, then p.s. change the ones mentioned in WikiPedia. Thanks, Bharat

Thanks Bharat. I updated whatever I could, as I also do not know on that template.

Regards, --Bobby Awasthi 13:30, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bobby, Thanks for the update.

Also, if i may suggest, there should be some set-parameters for listing of school & colleges, or all together a separate sub-section. Else, the list will be never ending and diverts you from basic content on Main Page. Same suggestion for 'Famous Personalities' Regards, Bharat

Hi Bharat, Thats the way any page would eventually evolve, but the length is still within set standards so we should not bother. Actually, there is a Category:Education_in_Kanpur that should definitely be added under the pages describing each individual institute. At some later stage, we would definitely make out from the descriptions (or from other editors who are in touch with real Kanpur; and we can remove proxy advertisements of private single-room schools. Same would eventually apply for personalities, but personalities are a lot easier to filter. Eventually, you relate all through categories. We can make a Category:Personalities_of_Kanpur when the list grows too long and remove them from original page leaving only a link to personalities. My thoughts, but I think not many are editing Kanpur anyways.

2006th Asian's Seventh most polluted city[edit]

Kanpur city is 7th most polluted city of Asia.

user:debbe 06 January 2007, 13:10 UTC

Sorry I had to update your comments. Talk page does give you the liberty, but not beyond a limit, you still cannot be offensive to millions staying in the same city. By your language, it appears you also have roots there. May I ask what you have done to improve the situation (besides saying shers while getting drunk next to a gutter, if you insist on so)!

Apologies for being a bit rude, though I dont stay there any more. I am sure I have seen even worse places in world.

Historical landmark : Boodha Bargad[edit]

Kanpur has a had a much glorious past which needs a mention. Kanpur having a strategic position close to jhansi and being a hub of military establishment had a bigger involvement in India's first war of independece. The inhumane treatment of Indians by General James O'Neil at Allahabad and Banaras invited the wrath of the crowd on the English which escalated into a massacre of innocents which was sad. Nana Sahib, Tantia Tope, Jwala Prasad and Azimullah Khan were the gallant fighters who spearheaded the revolt of 1857. The Boodha Bargad (Banyan Tree) at Nanarao Park is a symbol of the sacrifices of our freedon fighters with 144 of them hanged on the very tree. I hope these more serious facts could get a mention in the article rather instances like Murray company is conveniently pronounced 'Mari' which bears no relevance to the cities past, present or future. --Abhinavmishraa 12:49, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

--—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Abhinavmishraa (talkcontribs) 12:45, 29 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Hi Abhinav, This is an article about Kanpur, not about 1857. If you go to that one, you will find a HUGE section on Kanpur. Please check Indian_Rebellion_of_1857. Another thing, even the Mari company is a fact, as much as Boodha Bargad is... Please check Other Attractions in the article. I have put the banyan tree there. You can add other headers also if you feel so, and start populating it. Who has stopped you?

Population and Area in infobox[edit]

I have edited the population density as per 2001 census report. http://www.upgov.nic.in/upinfo/census01/cen01-7.htm But the area is coming out to be some 3000 sq.km. Something is terribly wrong some where. I have no idea what is the total area of Kanpur Nagar District (Not just the urban town area). Please seek some valid source and put the correct data.

PS: The last edit was made by me, and I was accidentally logged out of wikipedia while editing.

Does anyone mind if the Entertainment and Places to Eat sections are removed? Such information belongs in a tourist pamphlet, not an encyclopedia. • metropolitan city	4,567,031
• Rank	9th
• Density	1,366/km2 (3,540/sq mi)
• Metro	5,620,067

With 2 reference links but none of these links verifies the same. First link says the city population excluding sub urban area is 27,67,031 and the second link says 2,920,067 including sub urban area. Add:- Cawnporeriders (The Cawnpore Riders a group of cycling enthusiasts based in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The goal of the club is to promote and encourage bicycling in our community for all levels of cyclists. Non-members are invited to join any of the rides offered. From weekly rides to scheduled events to event support we are involved in a wide range of cycling activities. We would like to invite you to join the Cawnpore Riders (Kanpur cycling club). There is no better way to meet other cyclists and join some great rides. The mission of our not-for-profit recreational organization is to promote and sponsor bicycling activities in Kanpur. Riding a bicycle is an activity beneficial both to the health and the environment. It improves a person's physical fitness and endurance. Moreover, it is usually an outdoor activity, which is in the benefit of people as they get fresh air.

Riding your bicycle can help build muscle, eliminate fat, strengthen your legs, lower blood pressure and increase endurance. Cycling has also been proven to be an extremely effective way to alleviate stress, reduce anxiety, clear your mind and improve your mood. Riding a bike, as with many types of aerobic exercise can improve sleep and make an individual more heart healthy too. Those who incorporate daily exercise (like cycling) into their routine often live longer.

Cycling requires no fossil fuel and, therefore, no harmful vehicle emissions or smog are released into the air when a person is riding his or her bicycle. Opting to use your bicycle a few times a week, instead of your car, is one of the simplest ways to lower your environmental footprint. Ravishashtri (talk) 10:05, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please change the "Kanpur Police Headquarters" in the primary collage to "City Kotwali" or "Nagar Kotwali" because, that is a police station (an old police station, which in India is called "Kotwali") and it is what it's name is. It is not the headquarters. The Kanpur Police Headquarters is the whole 'Police Line' area of Civil Lines.

Please also change (in the same collage) "Civil Lines District" to just "Civil Lines". Just omit the "District", because it is not a district. In India, a district is an administrative sub-division within a state. Civil Lines itself is in the district of Urban Kanpur (called Kanpur City, or officially Kanpur Nagar).

Since, the "Manchester" nickname is not something official but colloquial; being a resident of the city, I suggest that "Manchester of the India" be changed to "Manchester of the East". Firstly because, it is grammatically very incorrect. Should have been "Manchester of India". Secondly, "Manchester of India" name is used prominently for Ahmedabad. And "Manchester of the East" is what used by the residents and in general sense, as the nickname of the city. I can tell because I was born here and have lived here for my whole life until now.

The district administration information is also very-very old. For example, Mr. Mohanty who is named as the Divisional Commissioner; has been transferred months ago. Here is the updated administration (the ones I know) as of April 19th, 2020:

Divisional Commissioner - Dr. Sudhir M. Bobde, IAS District Magistrate - Dr. Brahmadev Ram Tiwari, IAS Additional Director General, Kanpur Zone - Prem Prakash, IPS Inspector General, Kanpur Range - Mohit Agarwal, IPS Senior Superintendent of Police, Kanpur Nagar/Kanpur City - Anant Dev Tiwari, IPS

Also, the DIG before the Senior Superintendent of Police should be removed, as both are separate posts. Also, since the article is just about the 'City of Kanpur', I believe Divisional Commissioner, ADG, IG, DIG should be removed from the table, and even from the article if possible. Because, these aren't the posts of the city, but of greater administrative divisions...of which Kanpur is seat. Or better, a section should be added in the article informing that the city serves as a seat for many bigger administrative divisions, and these posts should be shifted there. Too many local authorities![edit]

Why the infobox - which supposedly is about a municipal corporation - is listing among the local leaders the district magistrate and the divisional commissioner too? They should be mentioned in Kanpur Nagar District and Kanpur Division respectively, not here. The same is true for the police leaders, who run local branches of the Uttar Pradesh Police, like the Kanpur Police.

I understand that the jurisdiction of those authorities extends over Kanpur, but the same can be said for Uttar Pradesh or the national goverment: should Yogi and Modi be added to the list too? The page refers to the municipal corporation, it's not a "who's who in Kanpur" list.

I propose to mention only mayor and municipal commissioner in the infobox, and resort the subsections of the "Government and politics" section: the "Civic administration" one should be first, and the "General administration" should go second and be renamed, maybe, "Metropolitan administration". --5.91.29.251 (talk) 08:26, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
