bad quotation[edit]

The material about prejudice against Galileans could NOT apply in R. Yose's time. Listen to the lecture by R. Gavriel Bechtofer, on Jerusalem Talmud Berachot 19-20, available on yerushalmi-online.org. By R. Yose's time, Jerusalem had been destroyed and the experts in Jewish law LIVED in the Galilee, in Tiberias and Sfat and so on. Hi, rabbis of R' Yose's generation such as R's Akiva and Tarfon lived in places like Lod and Yavneh. Only late in their generation did the Bar Kochba revolt take place and they were forced to move to the Galilee. So R' Yosi Haglili's ancestry would have been unusual. In fact the very fact that he is called by this name means that the other sages were not Galileans. Ar2332 (talk) 19:26, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

interpretation vs translation vs source document[edit]

The supposed citation to Talmud Bavli Eruvin 53b is either a bad translation or an interpretation of a translation. Here is Kollel Daf ha-Yomi's page: http://dafyomi.co.il/eruvin/points/ev-ps-053.htm. There is no sign that "a man of Galil" is R. Yose ha-Glili in Gemara, Rashi, or Tosafot. There is audio with text, translation and explanation here. http://download.dafyomi.org/content/dafyomi/wma/eruvin/eruvin_053b.wma You did not name the edition or website you got your data from and your source was not reliable. Hi, this came from the Jewish Encyclopedia, and I edited the text without checking it. I just added the Sefaria (Koren/Steinsaltz) translation+commentary, which makes clear that it was R' Yose Haglili. Do you think the rest of the sentence is a fair description? This is the Sefaria website. It does not tag R. Yose. https://www.sefaria.org/Eruvin.53b?lang=bi What was not taught by a multitude of experts, is not regarded as accepted. See the story in Eduyot 5:6; R. Akavya was at risk of being considered a rebellious elder, but he told his son to abandon the father's opinion having heard it from only one person, and act according to the majority. R. I don't understand what you are saying. Sefaria does name R Yose Haglili. So does your site - "R. Yosi ha'Gelili was going on the road..." So we have two sites that say R Yose Haglili and no sites that say otherwise. (I haven't listened to the recording, sorry) Ar2332 (talk) 19:27, 30 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
