The mention of 4 for 7 on a soft pitch at Old Trafford in 1953 is ambiguous, mainly because it is in a sentence about his performances for Yorkshire. The wickets were taken for England in the third Test Match of 1953, against Australia, in their second innings, and very quickly, in the last hour of play, causing even the BBC radio commentary team to discuss the prospect of what would have been an almost miraculous England win. Wardle was one of the few bowlers of the time capable of standing a game on its head in a matter of half an hour or so. Cardus's story in the following day's Manchester Guardian was headed 'Skittles at the wake'. 2A00:23C7:5A0B:8601:95F3:E2FC:13DB:AF51 (talk) 00:53, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
