John West Lippitt[edit]

He appears as "John West Lippitt, Jr." in an Ancestry tree born to John West Lippitt, Sr. (1780-1837) and Sarah Mason (1784-1845). Do you think that is reliable enough? --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 21:36, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you mean this, yes. My personal opinion is: when the data stated on a genealogy site are partly the same as in a printed (reliable) source, so that we can confirm that the person mentioned on the site and in the book are the same, we may AGF and accept the remainder of the info. If mistakes were made by the (amateur) genealogist, it may be corrected later, if a better source appears. In this case the son has the same lifedates as stated in the article, originally taken from a bio at the Oswego County government site, now a dead link, and confirmed by the cemetery transcriptions. Feel free to add it. For family info, genealogical sites are citable as references. Kraxler (talk) 15:27, 18 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that my above stated opinion does not apply to "Ancestry.com", because this guideline Wikipedia:External links/Perennial websites#Ancestry.com takes preference. In my personal experience, Family Tree Maker is much more reliable than Ancestry.com, but overall one should always cross-check with other sources, if possible.
