This information is factually majorily incorrect, and should be quickly changed as Chief Justice John M. Walker Jr. is currently a sitting United States Federal judge.

John Mercer Walker Jr., by his name alone, is the son of Dr. John Mercer Walker Sr. (S&B 1931) and Elsie Louise Mead. Dr. John Mercer Walker was an uncle of President George Herbert Walker Bush (S&B 1948), whose mother, Dorothy Walker Bush, was Dr. Walker's sister. Two of Dr. Walker's brothers, George Herbert Walker, Jr. and Louis Walker, were also Bonesmen (1927 and 1936, respectively).

John Mercer Walker Sr. received his MD from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in 1936, and was in private practice until he contracted polio in the 1950. He also had a career in investment banking, first with the family firm of G.H. Walker & Co., then as a limited partner in Alex Brown & Co. (Dr. John Walker, 81, President Bush's Uncle. New York Times, August 18, 1990.)

In 1939, he married Elsie Louise Mead, of the Mead Paper Corporation (now MeadWestvaco) family. Nancy Bush was an attendant at the wedding (Louise Mead, Sarah Lawrence Alumna, Becomes Engaged to Dr. John M. Walker. New York Times, Sep. 26, 1939; Miss Elsie Mead Wed in a Church. New York Times, Nov. 26, 1959).

He was elected a director of Mead in 1957 (Mead Paper Shows a Drop in Earnings; 71 Cents a Share Cleared in 12 Weeks. New York Times, July 11, 1957.) In 1952, he joined Memorial Hospital (now Sloan-Kettering Hospital) as clinical assistant in surgery. In 1955, he was made associate attending surgeon and associate clinical director. In 1962, he was elected chairman of the executive committee and chief executive officer of the hospital. He replaced Laurance S. Rockefeller, who resigned. (Memorial Hospital Names Officers. Chief Judge John M. Walker Jr. was also not a member of Skull & Bones, however, he father and uncles (see above) were.

Additional Source: The Family, Kitty Kelly, Random House Books, who specificially mentioned that President Bush (#41) appointed Dr. John M. Walker Sr.'s son to the federal bench as a thank you for the care that his uncle gave to George H.W. Bush's daughter Robin; who died of cancer.

John M. Walker, Jr. is Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. At the time of his appointment to the court in 1989, he was a United States District Judge in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. He became Chief Judge on October 1, 2000.

Chief Judge Walker received his B.A. degree from Yale University in 1962, and his J.D. degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1966.

Chief Judge Walker served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves from 1963 until 1967. From 1966 until 1968, he was State Counsel to the Republic of Botswana under the aegis of an Africa-Asia Public Service Fellowship. Chief Judge Walker was a private law practitioner in New York City from 1969 to 1970. From 1970 to 1975 he served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division, Southern District of New York. In 1975 he returned to private law practice with the New York firm of Carter, Ledyard & Milburn, where he was initially an associate and later a partner. In 1981 Chief Judge Walker became Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, responsible for policy in law enforcement, regulatory, and trade matters, and with oversight of the Customs Service, Secret Service, Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control. Chief Judge Walker remained in this position until 1985, when he became a United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York.

Chief Judge Walker has served as Special Counsel to the U.S. Administrative Conference (1987-1992); president of the Federal Judges’ Association (1993-1995); and member of the Budget Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States (1991-1999). He has been a Visiting Lecturer at Yale Law School since 2000; an Adjunct Professor at N.Y.U. Law School since 1996; and Director and on the faculty of N.Y.U. Law School’s Institute of Judicial Administration and Appellate Judges Seminar since 1992. Chief Judge Walker has also been a Director of the U.S. Association of Constitutional Law since 1997.

Chief Judge Walker is married with a daughter and three stepsons. His father is George Herbert Walker, Jr., cofounder of the New York Mets. He is the cousin of U.S. President George H.W. Bush, sharing grandfather George Herbert Walker. He belongs to Yale's Skull and Bones Society.

When it was time for Louise Walker Resor ’39 to pick a college, she chose to be near New York City and all the fine music it had to offer. For her daughter, Elsie Mead Walker ’69, the lure of Sarah Lawrence was the independent course of study it allowed her, especially following four years at a strict boarding school. By the time Audrey Noyes Ludemann ’76—the daughter of Louise’s cousin Margaret “Peggy” Talbott Noyes ’49—graduated, Sarah Lawrence had become an established family tradition. At least three more members of this large family attended the College: Two were, like Peggy Noyes, cousins of Louise—Katherine Thomas Bidwell ’59 and Mary Hilliard Jackson ’40—and the third was Katherine’s son, Stephen T. O’Neill ’88. Peggy and Katherine—both former SLC trustees—died last year; Mary died in 1999.

But no one among the kin will swear that the list stops there. Katharine Kirkland Walker ’04, a CCE student of creative writing, is Louise Resor’s daughter-in-law. And Katharine’s son, John Bingham ’93, graduated after a stint in the U.S. Navy. Have you lost count? Don’t worry.

“It gets too complicated to follow,” observes Audrey, who points out there is at least one common theme among family members when the subject of Sarah Lawrence comes up. “We all love music, and Sarah Lawrence nurtured the love,” she says. “We always talk about that at family reunions.”

And Elsie says there’s something else they share when it comes to their college days: “The respect for individuality and independence that was fostered at Sarah Lawrence. As members of a diverse family group looking back now, there are clearly commonalities.” —E.B.

...Should not be presented as truthful. In this instance the information presented on Wikipedia is not only fraught with spelling errors, but biographical errors as well.

Personally, I will never use this source for academic (or any other) research in the future. I am disappointed that such a visited media could be so irresponsible.
