Nickname[edit]

Where does this "Muhammad Ali of tennis" comes from ?! Why ?

No it's not ethnically delicate. Players really do call him that, he does look like Muhammad Ali very much, and they've been showing it on the program so many times and talking about it. Just don't put the nickname in the infobox lol. ~ GoldenGoose100 (talk) 11:16, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wilfried[edit]

Incorrect reference to seeding?[edit]

In the 2008 sections it says "6th seeded Tsonga". This seems to be incorrect to me. He has never been ranked that high.

More on injuries?[edit]

I know nothing about this guy other than the great tennis he's played in Australia this year. The ESPN2 commentators have referred to the injuries that have troubled him until recently, but I see nothing about that in the article. Does anyone have the skinny on this? Serve like Roddick[edit]

Somebody put this comment in the article (sic!), I am moving it here: (As he is only 3 years younger than Roddick... is this likely?) It is regarding the following statement: As a child, he and fellow tennis player Gaël Monfils would spend hours trying to develop a serve just like Andy Roddick's.

Career Earnings - delete[edit]

I took out the whole "Career Earnings" section from the bottom of the article - it had a redundant one row-one column box with Tsonga's career earnings - and also an interesting trivia note I myself had written in January. It's redundant, and violates WP:Notability I think, so I have removed that section now. Trivia is also not condoned on wikipedia. See the old page here, if you think it should not have been removed.

Name[edit]

The assertion that JWT's real name is Tsonga-Petsonga is wrong and now considered as a recurent vandalism on WP:fr since absolutely no reliable source or data support this name. The ATP tour website, Davis Cup website and all the press articles in french and english are naming him Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The only source given for this name is a pseudo-fan website totally not reliable.--LPLT (talk) 18:09, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In addition, the IP 213.149.189.241 is responsible on various WP to add systematically this error and referencing it with the pseudo-fan website whereas the only official website is www.jowiltsonga.fr.--LPLT (talk) 15:16, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Relation to Charles N'Zogbia[edit]

I'm 100% certain that this isn't true. I have looked back into where it came into existance and it seems to have come about via some lazy journalism and vandalism. The claim is initially inserted in this article in this [1]edit (note the vandalism insertion of "mongrel" too) on 27/1/08. It is then inserted on Charles N'Zogbia's article [2]here, although not supported by the source used, also on 27/1/08. The source that we now have [3]is written on 28/1/08, when both pages have the claim on it, unsourced. This has then been used as the source to back up the claim. I have therefore removed the claim as not having an independent valid source, prior to 27/1/08. If someone can provide proof from prior to that date, when the claim was made here, then I think that should be acceptable, or something confirming it directly by either of the people involved. Wrong[edit]

He made a run at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships, upsetting Federer on Centre Court to reach the semifinals for the first time in his Wimbledon career, handing Federer his first loss after leading two sets to love and finishing the match 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 4-6, 4-6.

Too much detail?[edit]

Removed a lot of material but still his career is far too detailed, especially 2011 and 2012 (and we're only halfway through), listing when he broke back, or lost a break, etc. in minor tournaments. Also reads like a fansite or blog entry with exclamation and question marks. e.g "This was not to be as Tommy polished off the Frenchman", "Tsonga looked extremely fatigued and the loss was perhaps a blessing in disguise. The days off will give Tsonga the appropriate time to rest up", "The semi-finals was bound to [be] an epic encounter", "An extremely disappointing result!", "This form looked worrying!", "we saw glimpses of what may come", "DelPo's apparent recurring knee injury perhaps started to shine through".

Definitely agree, it seems like every single match he has played is in this article. Needs to be reduced to major matches (i.e. titles, finals, wins against top 4?). Also the playing style section seems quite opinionated. Tombo7791 (talk) 20:44, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Records[edit]

Tsonga is the only man to have beaten every member of the Big Four at a Major. Is this notable enough to create a Records section and add it in there, similar to Federer, Djokovic, Nadal etc. pages? @LoveVanPersie: I changed the affricate to the fricative because that's how Tsonga pronounces it himself (perhaps the affricate pronunciation is also possible), and I have no idea whether Tsonga is pronounced with [ɔ̃] or [ɔŋ].
