Maltese[edit]

I'm simply unable to find a source to verify this. Does anyone know where it says that he's of Matlese descent? Vulturell 03:49, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't look that much, simply typing in "Jason Bateman Maltese" in the Google search engine brought up numerous references to his mother being Maltese - example: TV.com. ExRat 20:06, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've changed the nationality reference to Maltese-American: both he and his sister are listed as such in the Maltese Americans article and he is referred to that way in various publications. Here's another example: [1] and another [2] and an interview where he refers to the fact himself [3]Kalindoscopy (talk) 14:06, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To the individual reverting the Maltese-American nationality edit: the information belongs where it is. Bateman's ethnicity is not part of his 'early life' but his general identity. Now that you understand this, kindly leave the article as it is. Kalindoscopy (talk) 16:59, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You have to edit within Wikipedia's policies, WP:Reliable sources and WP:MOSBIO. Your first two references are copies of old versions of this very Wikipedia article. They have no credited authors and do not pass WP:RS. The third reference, an interview with Bateman himself, does not state that his mother is Maltese. Furthermore, this information does not go into the opening paragraph. Plase read WP:MOSBIO - section 3 - part 3b - "Ethnicity should generally not be emphasized in the opening unless it is relevant to the subject's notability. ". Bateman is not notable for being part Maltese. He is notable for being an actor. All Hallow's Wraith (talk) 17:03, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
He is Maltese-American and the fact is incontrovertible. The operative word is 'generally'... and in this case I see no reason for Bateman not to be recognised as Maltese-American from the get go. He is already listed as such, along with his sister. Kalindoscopy (talk) 17:14, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rye, New York[edit]

There are two towns named Rye, New York. Which is Bateman from? --Nick Douglas 19:39, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Photo[edit]

Doesn't it seem like there ought to be a more current photo of Bateman in the article? At this point we have a screen cap from "The Simpsons" and a photo of him when he was a teenager -- he's a grown-ass man, as they say, shouldn't the image reflect that? I don't know much about fair use, or I'd do it myself. Where Anne hath a will, Anne Hathaway. 22:50, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, if you could walk up to him and he agrees you can take his picture, that should go into the article straight away. As it is we should go with the one we have now. CanadianCaesar Et tu, Brute? 03:56, 10 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Is there not an Arrested Development one that is available? CorleoneSerpicoMontana 21:20, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I found two free pictures of him, so take your pick: Image:JasonBateman-LF-01.jpg, Image:JasonBateman-LF-02.jpg. (I like the smiley one better.) I've added them both to his gallery on Commons. -- KittyRainbow (talk) 19:25, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Maltese... again[edit]

Someone has edited this page and referred to him as of British descent. Hasn't it already been established that Jason and Justine Bateman are of Maltese descent?

Pcacmar (talk) 16:56, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Malta has only been independent from Britain since 1964. So his mom may identify as British.--216.19.177.73 (talk) 03:51, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My father was born in Malta in 1956. Does that make him British? Does a person born in Wallis and Futuna make them French? It certainly does not. A person born in Hawaii is referred to as Hawaiian and not an American.

92.251.76.140 (talk) 14:00, 19 August 2008

Are you delusional? Do you not know that Hawaii is part of the U.S.? A person born in Hawaii would indeed be referred to as an American. A Hawaiian would be someone of Hawaiian ethnicity, but the vast majority of Hawaii's population is not of Hawaiian ethnicity. They are generally descendants of Asian and European immigrants who traveled to the islands in the last 150 years. Most of Hawaii's inhabitants are ethnically Japanese, Korean, Chinese, English, Irish, Dutch, German, Portuguese, and/or Filipino. But whatever the background, they are all American, even those of native Hawaiian ethnicity. Barack Obama, Bethany Hamilton, Tia Carrere, Lauren Graham, Kelly Preston, Jack Johnson, and Bette Midler were all born in Hawaii. Are they not American to you?
I don't know what the story is on Jason Bateman. Frankly, I don't care. But there appears to be a debate as to whether his mother was an actual person of Maltese ancestry, or was a person of British ancestry who happened to live in Malta (many Brits live in Malta, both as leftover colonists or retirees). If she is the former, then it would be accurate to refer to Jason as having Maltese heritage. However, if she is the latter, then Jason wouldn't be Maltese. After all, if one is not a citizen of Malta (which Jason isn't) or has Maltese heritage (which he wouldn't if his mother was in fact of British descent), then it would be inaccurate to refer to him as being Maltese. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheyCallMeTheEditor (talkcontribs) 00:46, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Private Life[edit]

Something needs to be added about his extensive drug use and party lifestyle. He became clean once he realized his future wife might leave him. It seems to be a huge part of who he is according to one of the articles cited.

If you can provide reliable sources for this information, go ahead and include it. Doniago (talk) 13:35, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Saw him on Conan the other night and he straight up said, "As a former user..." There's got to be some infos out there. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.167.124.47 (talk) 22:53, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Some mention of the iPhone incident should be added to the personal section. It was well documented and heavily publicized. If material not related to his acting is dubbed trivial and not worth mentioning, then I'll proceed to remove all mention of the dodgers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.192.40.35 (talk) 04:27, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Filmography box needed[edit]

This article would really benefit from a filmography box, it would be much tidier.Teatreez (talk) 21:40, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wording[edit]

"More recently, he has appeared in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.." Since "more recently" is relative to the original edit, it should be changed to avoid any confusion in the future. Using "recently" to describe anything will quickly be confusing once the recent aspect passes. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.17.153.254 (talk) 02:37, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Doniago (talk) 13:40, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Jason Kent Bateman (born January 14, 1969) is an American actor, director and producer who rose to prominence as a high-profile adolescent actor in the 1980s, in sitcoms such as Silver Spoons and The Hogan Family, before returning in the early 2000s in the role of Michael Bluth on Arrested Development,"

Did he not exist in the 90s? His filmography lists at least two roles during that decade. This makes it sound as if he completely dropped off the map, and ignores an entire decade. 71.28.205.1 (talk) 15:14, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

English[edit]

Surely it should say he's an American-English actor? He's 1/2 English!http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2011/jul/16/jason-bateman-horrible-bosses — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.28.89.3 (talk) 10:58, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Only" four?[edit]

His family moved when he was "only four."

This sounds idiotic.

Why not say "already four"?

If he got, say, married when he was only four, then maybe use the word only. But for moving? Come on. His family moved when he was four. No only. No already. Just four. It's not a big deal to move. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.183.100.242 (talk) 22:21, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Awards and Nominations[edit]

Hi;

In 2005 area I made a mistake when merging some dates and shows. I can't find where I made the mistake. Could someone fix it for me? Thanks 174.94.154.200 (talk) 21:13, 4 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

From the article history, it looks like your changes have essentially been reverted at this point. DonIago (talk) 14:49, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What the heck is this issue with Justine Bateman?[edit]

I'm middle-aged and don't get out much, so I don't understand why all of a sudden there's some kind of edit war going on over whether or not Justine Bateman is Jason Bateman's sister. What is the basis for saying that she isn't? Per the article of their father, Kent Bateman, both of them are his children. Unless there's a reliable source—that isn't an obvious extended goof intended to cause Wikipedia manipulation for the lulz—that the two of them aren't related, the fact that they are siblings is an obvious fact, well-documented since at least the early 1980s, that belongs in both actors' articles. Please enlighten me. - Julietdeltalima (talk) 17:09, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see why this was removed either, it's very easy to source. At any rate I re-added it with a source that definitely confirms that they're siblings.--Cúchullain t/c 16:21, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently the confusion comes from this video, where Jason Bateman answers no to a question about whether he's related to Justine Bateman. It's clearly a joke as there are hundreds of sources out there verifying they're siblings.--Cúchullain t/c 16:40, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You're my hero today. I knew something like that had to be at issue. Thank you very much! - Julietdeltalima (talk) 21:26, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Personal Life section[edit]

The Personal Life section appears to be functioning as a catch-all for information that doesn't fit the other sections. There is a reference to Bateman's appearance in a music video and a lot of good information related to the controversy over harassment within the Arrested Development cast. Perhaps an "Other" section within the Career field and a "Controversy" section would put the article in order. Any thoughts? Kirby777 (talk) 01:48, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
