This article is excessively focussed on bashing company's past in unencyclopaedic language at the moment. I'll come back and turn it into a proper business profile at some point.Philip 13:06, 30 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Dear Pcp, this article should NOT be a "proper business profile" any more than the British East Indian Company should be. Jardine & Matheson is significant primarily for its historical role and secondarily as a business now. Therefore, while the business information is necessary and appropriate, one should keep in mind the relevance of the article as a history article. If this company is important enough to be mentioned in all sorts of introductory textbooks on modern China, I think it is a pretty big deal in this context. As for bashing and unencyclopedic language, you should see how most academics are describing it. "Commissioner Lin and the Opium Wars" is dated but good, if I recall?Sardino (talk) 06:47, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
It looks more like it was written by someone from the Jardine's PR department to me. I may have missed something but it seems to entirely omit reference to the role played by Opium in the company's early history. I wouldn't want to stir up any legal issues with a company that still exists, but surely some cross referencing to the opium wars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opium_war) would make sense? P.T.A.Dorman 16:15, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
It looks like the article was describing Jardines in the immediate post-WWII years. Most of the companies in the companies sections described as "today's" no longer exist or are totally irrelevant today. There's no mention of the Jardine's property in mainland China being confisticated by Communists China in 1949, and all the developments it had in post-WWII Hong Kong. 205.152.6.42 22:38, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
I would agree that this article to a large extent ignores the significant role Jardine and Matheson played in the Chinese opium trade, they were the largest agent in the foreign opium trade in China for a while, and I think that deserves at least a paragraph, I will try to do this once I dig out my undergrad thesis on this subject and can verify my assertion with sources.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.32.13.98 (talkcontribs)
Its opium involvement deserves way more than a paragraph! As much of its initial wealth came from the opium trade. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.176.124.105 (talk) 03:16, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Simple suggestion: split this into two articles: 1. An historical article on the role of J.M. in the British Empire, etc., and 2. a contemporary business profile. Obviously, the burden of colonial history is a large part of why the company's name deserves a Wikipedia article at all, but this may indeed be a separate matter, meriting a separate article from the mere listing of their current offices & operations (etc.). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.232.244.228 (talk) 14:31, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Jardine and Matheson architecture in high pre-war Shanghai

Can someone add information on Jardine and Matheson architecture in high pre-war Shanghai? --Dpr 05:37, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

Recent events missing

This article lacks any information on ecent events surrounding the attempted takeover of (parts of) Jardine's by Lee Ka-Shing. Furthermore, their de-listing from the HK stock exchange and following not-so-pleasant reaction from the Chinese and HK government.84.178.114.135 (talk · contribs · WHOIS)

Various statemtents in this article are completely out of date. It seems to be a press release or internal coporate history prior to 1997. For starters, in the section on the Development of the Colony of Hong Kong, I would point out that only Hongkong Land remains under the chairmanship of the managing director of Jardines. The other three companies stated in the article are now controlled by Wheelock.--Hongkongexpat 04:32, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Complete lack of references

The article has not a single reference. For such a long and detailed article, this is inexcusable. Patiwat 04:50, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

I'd like to second Patiwat's critique and as an expert in International Trade and Affairs take this valuable critique a step further. The article is clearly an advertisement, and not even a good or useful one. It is so far out of date in its discussion of products such as tea et al that it is an embarrassment to experts in these various product areas. There is one solution that I see for this article: it purports to be a corporate analysis of JMH. Kindly bring it up to date or consider deletion or a complete rewrite. Thanks so much. i_made_this 18:12, 15 June 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rotterdarned (talkcontribs)

Wade-Giles vs. Pinyin

Perhaps someone should go through this article and convert the PRC place names into pinyin, as that romanization is largely considered the standard amongst Madarin speaking peoples around the world (with exception, of course, for the ROC-Taiwan), and is the official romanization for the PRC itself. Unfortunately, I don't feel that I am familiar enough with the conversions to do it myself. Also, some proper nouns have maintained their Wade-Giles spellings despite the proliferation of Pinyin, and I am not familiar enough with the geography of Hong Kong to sufficiently determine whether or not a particular location has maintianed W-G over pinyin. Anyone feeling up to this? -Joe in Seattle —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.227.219.0 (talk) 10:03, 8 January 2007 (UTC).

Done. I couldn't find what "Snasi" was, at least in reference to China. 203.218.172.218 14:47, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Split and Update

I suggest that the article is split into Jardine, Matheson & Co., Ltd, covering the history of the company pre-1997 (i.e. the Hong Kong handover) and Jardines, which is what they call themselves now. According to the official company website, their current business operations bear little relation to the contents of the current article. All comments welcome. Philg88 (talk) 23:55, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

This is an eminently sensible suggestion, but I'm not up to date either. I have seen favorable reviews of Maggie Keswick's book and assume that this would be the main new source, but I have not read it myself. I'll add it to the references, just so the innocent reader will know that it exists. ch (talk) 19:58, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

I have now created the new article History of Jardine, Matheson & Co. which covers the period 1832–1954 when Jardines withdrew from mainland China. The next stage in the process is to remove the (now duplicated) info in this article and bring it up to date which I am working on now. ► Philg88 ◄ talk 00:09, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

"Well begun is half done"! ch (talk) 04:38, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, still an awful lot of work to do but it's an enjoyable project. Shame split out articles don't qualify for WP:DYK even though it was largely rewritten. ► Philg88 ◄ talk 22:50, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

The history section has now been replaced with the new version. Now working on the "Today" section so that the "Outdated" tags can be removed. ► Philg88 ◄ talk 00:38, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
