As a Chaplain in The American Legion, I (and others) often refer to Blackwell's poems concerning war during Memorial and Veteran observances. I believe he may be more popular in the South as he was from Virginia, where he served in the Army of the Confederacy. His discharge papers are in the library at William & Mary. Even so, it seems that historians and veterans in the Northern states are familiar with his work as well. I had a collector's copy of the original book that I gave to a friend who is a Civil War author and historian. Blackwell's work is still in print today and you can order the books online from various publishing houses.
