Copyright violation[edit]

Many parts of this article (or maybe vice versa) seemed to have been pulled form this website.

I found this to be true before seeing this talk page. It does look like a cut and paste to me. --DThomsen8 (talk) 23:40, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually it may be "cut-and-paste" from http://www.history.army.mil/books/RevWar/ss/broom.htm which appears to be a military book by army officer/profs printed by the US Government - so likely not copyrightable. Or that may be a cut-and-paste from the US Archives link in the article. I did make 9 edits to this page, which were not cut and paste, but probably minor formatting and style corrections. I'd thought that it was from the congressional bios series - which is copyright free, but now think that it came originally from somewhere else, but of a similar source. Citations needed template[edit]

The article is almost devoid of citations. The reference to the National Archives is used twice and only confirms Broom as a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The only other citation is a deadlink.

The template should remain until most of the article is confirmed via sources. Allreet (talk) 06:10, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Slave owner[edit]

This issue is not mentioned in the article, but I've found a genealogy website that identifies Broom as having had at least one slave in his household: Mixed Genes. The information seems reliable but not enough to use as a citation since it was most likely written by a member or relative of the Broom family. This source has this to say on Broom and the issue of slavery:

Jacob also served in the State Legislature from 1784 – 6 and in 1788. In 1787, he signed a petition to abolish slavery, although a later census shows him to have had a slave in the household, in addition to several free servants. Allreet (talk) 06:17, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
