deaccessioning whose art?[edit]

Concern about the re-naming of this page.[edit]

Although it may be accurate genealogically speaking, I can find no reference to J. Watson Webb Jr. ever being referred to as "the III". J. Watson Webb Jr. at IMDb, at Find-A-Grave: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=7482159 and the New York Times obituary http://www.nytimes.com/2000/06/14/arts/j-watson-webb-former-head-of-the-shelburne-vt-museum.html all refer to him as J. Watson Webb, Jr. To avoid confusion, I think the original name of this article should be reinstated. - J. Van Meter (talk) 16:54, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

- Google turns up three hits for "J. Watson Webb III" = all going to one family tree on RootsWeb. "J. Watson Webb, Jr." turns up ten pages of hits. While IMBD may not be considered reliable, the NYT and the LA Times (http://articles.latimes.com/2000/jun/14/local/me-40827) certainly are. Webb went by "Jr." professionally - whether it was appropriate for him to do so is another question. For the sake of convention (three hits vs. ten pages) and even the man's gravestone, once again, I suggest that the article name be returned to the original. J. The issue here is not the misuse of suffixes. The issue is that you have changed the title of an article from a person's professional and commonly-used (make that exclusively-used) used name to the one that you consider to be more appropriate. It is not helpful. There are at least a dozen wiki-links to J. Watson Webb Jr. There are none to J. Watson Webb III - because he never went by that name. Your change creates confusion. J. We have a very firm rule here, shortcutted as WP:COMMONNAME, to cover just such situations. His real name on his birth certificate could have been Balthazar Atreides yos'Galen ; but if he was known professionally as J. Watson Webb, Jr., if that is the name listed in film credits and encyclopedias of film, then our knowledge of his actual legal name is utterly moot. WP:COMMONNAME trumps legalities, which is why we have an article on Jerry Ford, not Leslie Lynch King, Jr.; and one on Bill Clinton, not William Jefferson Blythe III. --Orange Mike | Talk 02:28, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion[edit]

The proposed deletion I oppose.

I did, since the proposal, locate a second obituary -- this one from Los Angeles where the subject resided and his film editing career was based -- and integrated some additional details from it into the article. An IMDb citation also added some more substance.

The lack of additional, secondary online sources on the film career is unfortunate but a good many Wiki film articles (of his 30 credits) link to his article and those links would be left orphaned by deletion.

The subject's role in the history of Shelburne Museum, while also quite lightly documented in secondary online sources, is substantive and may well be augmented from book sources.

I would leave the template:refimprove on the page in case there are off-line book sources to be found. Swliv (talk) 17:28, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
