Oppose. Since Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme doesn't actually mean International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (it means International Union of Alpinist Associations), I'm guessing the latter is an English subtitle/strapline rather than its actual official name or even the name by which it's known in English. That does not change the fact that the name should be in English. And the foundations official page says that the proposed name is the English equivalent. But it doesn't need to be exact translation. Seems like a very bogus "oppose". JOJ ^Hutton 15:37, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No, WP:USEENGLISH absolutely does not say we should translate all names into English. Reread it. It says we should use the name by which the subject is commonly known in reliable English-language sources, which is not the same thing at all. It is not our job to translate everything into English for the hell of it. Where does the UIAA webpage say that? I couldn't see it. It seems to generally refer to itself as the UIAA as far as I can see, as do most English-language sources. I wouldn't object to it being moved to UIAA, which already redirects here. An equivalent sporting example is FIFA. The acronym of the French name is always used, not the English name (International Federation of Association Football) or its acronym. -- Necrothesp (talk) 16:23, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the English version of the site. Right at the bottom. Yes the article uses UIAA and sources will as well, but the English language title of the organization is the proposed title. JOJ ^Hutton 16:29, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Support A search of English sources. Google book: "International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation" receives 498 hits.[1], "Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme" receives 81 hits [2]. The common name in English appears to be the proposed title. Further, given the proposed title exists in wide usage I do believe WP:USEENGLISH would apply.--Labattblueboy (talk) 20:47, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Support It's not like the proposed name is just a translation the nominator thought of; it's the organization's self-identified English name. "UIAA" probably doesn't meet WP:ACRONYMTITLE, and anyway, "UIAA" being more common than "International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation" isn't a real objection to this move. Evidence that "Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme" is more common than "International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation" in English sources would be. --BDD (talk) 20:48, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
