Definition of samādhi[edit]

When this article was first created (in August 2006), samādhi was translated consistently as "concentration." Then, on 10 Jan. 2016, an anonymous IP (109.147.0.18) made its only two edits to Wikipedia where it changed "concentration" to "stillness of mind" in two locations in this article but left "concentration" in 12 other locations. I think some might find this confusing; others, a disservice. While I can appreciate that there are many vibrant contemporary Buddhist communities (extending from Christina Feldman and her colleagues at the awesome Bodhi College to Ajahn Brahm -- although it looks like Bhikkhu Sujato on suttacentral.org is using "immersion" in some contexts?) that translate samādhi as "stillness" (or some variation on this); traditionally, for over a century, it has been translated as "concentration" (e.g., check out the PTS Pali-English Dictionary [PED], originally published in 1921). So, not knowing how to dialogue with IP address 109.147.0.18, and wanting to be fair, I'm going to change "stillness of mind" in this article to "concentration/stillness" and then add a couple of references for each (e.g., for "concentration," depending on time, I'll cite the PED, Richard Shankman in "The Experience of Samadhi," maybe Ven. Thanissaro, Bhikkhu Bodhi, etc.; and, for "stillness," I have queued up a convenient Feldman article in Tricycle, Ajahn Brahm being interviewed in Shankman's book, maybe Stephen Batchelor, Martine Batchelor, etc.).
