On 8 September 2023, it was proposed that this article be moved from Indian Wells Masters to Indian Wells Open. The result of the discussion was moved.

Williams' boycott article[edit]

Disagree This is old news and would probably triple the amount of prose on the Indian Wells page and turn it into the Serena and Venus and other info page. Merge it with the Serena or Venus pages if it must be merged because it would require no more than a single sentence on the Indian Wells page, if any. Indian Wells Masters → BNP Paribas Open – There is no such thing as the Indian Wells Masters. "Masters" is exclusive terminology that refers to male-only ATP events. The BNP Paribas Open is a stop on both the ATP and WTA tours, so both men and women play at the tournament. Additionally, as the tournament has changed both name and location several times, there's no generic term that refers to this particular event. Sorry, this would be a very contested move. Tennis Project oversees naming and we use no sponsored names because they change all the time. There are so many sources that call it the Indian Wells Masters that this is an easy place to leave it. Fyunck(click) (talk) 22:39, 29 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That would be a possibility but most sources call it the Indian Wells Masters or Indian Wells Masters Series (for both ladies and men)... that's USA Today in 2001, ESPN in 2001, Sports Mirchi in 2015, ANC News Australia... Masters very much reflect the type of tournament it is... right below the majors. "Indian Wells Open" can be sourced though not as popular as Indian Wells Masters. Oppose – for the same reasons mentioned above this defunct tournament Tokyo Indoor the individual yearly pages were first created using the tournament name then a lot of the pages were changed to the sponsors name e.g. 1978 Seiko World Super Tennis but you couldn't find enough sources but you could for 1978 Tokyo Indoor so they were changed back to the original.--Navops47 (talk) 07:14, 6 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Indian Wells Masters → Indian Wells Open – This is a joint WTA/ATP event, but the WTA does not use "Masters" terminology. "Indian Wells Masters" gets about 2.5x the ghits of "Indian Wells Open" (879,000 vs 383,000), but the current title is not worth the ATP-first inaccuracy – and anyway, the actual most common names for this event are "BNP Paribas Open" or just "Indian Wells", but neither is the title for good reason.
