Ecky Thump[edit]

My understanding is that this phrase was invented by 70s UK tv comedians The Goodies, and was a spoof Lancashire martial art. I've never heard it used as a real phrase - can anyone put me right? Here's the Goodies episode listing:

  • No. 42, Kung Fu Kapers
  • AKA Ecky-Thump (g)
  • Series Five, Programme Seven
  • 1st BBC Transmission: 24 March 1975
  • BBC Project Number 98447
  • Bill reveals he is a master of the ancient Lancashire martial art of Ecky-Thump. The effectiveness of Ecky- Thump leads to a craze sweeping the nation, which Bill intends to exploit by taking over t'Parliament. The only way to stop him is by adding remote control his secret weapon - black puddings.
  • Guest Cast
  • Michael Barratt
  • Richard Pescud
  • William F. Sully

No, that is incorrect. The Goodies simply picked up what (having asked a Yorkshireman) I now know to be Lancashire dialect. This is more or less what is said in the article, though the county is a bit off. At any rate, I can source the "ecky" which appears in the Penguin Dictionary of Historical Slang under the entry for "heck": it's a minced oath. Notinasnaid 23:23, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also mentioned in [1] (table of contents for a scholarly book "Northern English: A Social and Cultural History".) Notinasnaid 23:35, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It is indeed from the Lancashire dialect. I have heard it used, by native Lancastrians. The Goodies were simply having a good time playing with the dialect, and some other national stereotypes. They didn't actually invent the phrase.t
Ecky = Hell, Thump = Intercourse. Hell-Sex. In Goodies, probably refering adulterous, non-marital, or homosexual acts. The ones that will send you to hell. Haha. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 207.81.105.56 (talk) 02:25, 7 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

I'm pretty sure Jack has gone on record in an interview stating he meant the Yorkshire meaning.

Track listing[edit]

I cannot find any source of the 'Official Track Listing' which was claimed 'confirmed by Pitchfork Media'. Is there any reliable source for this? If not, we have to go back to the published partial list. Notinasnaid 21:35, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I see a source has been found. Web searches and searches of Pitchforkmedia weren't finding anything. Notinasnaid 09:29, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright issues[edit]

With a natural enthusiasm, just about every word from http://www.whitestripes.com/ on the subject of the new album has been reproduced on this article. Unfortunately, I think this has to be radically trimmed. The information is all copyright, and we have far exceeded what is considered "fair use". Comments? Notinasnaid 15:15, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, in the absence of replies I will start trimming and paraphrasing. Notinasnaid 08:12, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And now the whole of http://www.nme.com/news/the-white-stripes/27768 pasted in. Sorry, it has to go. Notinasnaid 19:24, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

USB drive[edit]

Does anyone know as to how the usb drives wil be sold? It would be good if we could find/ add some information in the article, especially for those who want to buy one.

Well, this isn't an advert for the album, it's an encyclopedic article about it. Just go to The White Stripes official site and go to the "store" link. It's the first item in the store. –King Bee (τγ) 14:26, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
i believe its only availible from thier official online store to America only... so if anyone else wants it i accept it'll be availible on eBay for a high price soon

Clipping[edit]

Can anyone find any good sources regarding the horrible mastering on the CD? It clips all over the place. I've seen lots of people comment on message boards/amazon regarding it but can't find an official source. We have an article on Loudness war which is what the (otherwise fantastic) album has fallen victim to it seems so I wonder if it would warrant a mention if a source is found. Jellypuzzle | Talk 20:49, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Aha! I've noticed the clipping as well and wondered if I had a defective copy.So I thought I'd look around and then ask you! But now I've saved that step, I suppose. LouiseCooke
Thats odd its in the Dynamic Range Radio Best of 2007 list [2], Maybe they use only Vinyl on that station? -- AJUK Talk!! 18:28, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think Vlado Meller, the mastering engineer behind this CD (and many, many other notoriously hot records) actually did much dynamic range reduction in the typical sense; comparing his version of, say, 300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues, to Hoffman's, they seem to have about the same dynamics: the major difference is Meller's is clipped to hell and back. However, I question the trustworthiness of that list, as it contains some really wrecked albums, like Era Vulgaris. 24.68.128.218 (talk) 03:55, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Vinyl Format[edit]

There's not much here about the vinyl edition of the album. Some sources and maybe some more info (like if it's being released in the US, of which I'm not sure. Or if it's only available on their site) would be good. Unfortunately, I can't find any.

It's on sale in most record shops here in the UK so figure it'll be the same for the US. Jellypuzzle | Talk 09:02, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it's in the US. I saw it today.

Tour Canceled[edit]

on their website it says the fourthcoming tour has to be cancelled cause meg is sick —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.220.165.19 (talk) 14:42, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unknown Vocalist[edit]

In I'm Slowly Turning Into You, there is a man whispering "I'm slowly turnign into you" that clearly isn't Jack. He isn't listed in the article. Who is he? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.160.156.239 (talk) 20:45, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's best to ask at the Wikipedia Reference Desk for things like this. This page is for discussing improvements to the Icky Thump article. Chevymontecarlo - alt 07:32, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

'Personnel'?[edit]

I don't like this term much. What about a different word/term? Chevymontecarlo - alt 07:33, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's a well read article with some areas that might lack citation. My main gripe with it is that it lacks technical personnel. Great job though otherwise. Andrzejbanas (talk) 18:45, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
