Tarsus or Tartus?[edit]

The main text of the article, and the source cited to support the statement, says that Ibn al-Qass was "of Tarsus" (in Turkey). The infobox, on the other hand, says that he died in Tartus, Syria. Both could be true, of course, but the Arabic article says he lived and died in Tartus, and the Persian (Farsi) article says Tarsus. (To further confuse things, the Tajik article says he died in Iran, but we can probably discount that.)

Reliable sources seem hard to come by, but I did find this book, which places Ibn al-Qass in Tartus—contradicting the existing source in the article. I'm inclined to replace the existing the source with the more recent source that I found and go with Tartus, but I'm certainly not an expert in this area. Can anyone clear this up? —ShelfSkewed Talk 02:20, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@ShelfSkewed: He died in Tarsus (Arabic: طرسوس), according to al-Dhahabi in his Siyar A'lam al-Nubala', Taj al-Din al-Subki in his Tabaqat al-Shafi'iyya al-Kubra, Ibn Khallikan in his Wafayat al-A'yan, Ibn al-'Imad al-Hanbali in his Shadharat al-Dhahab, Isma'il Pasha al-Baghdadi in his Hadiyyat al-'Arifin, and al-Zirikli in his al-A'lam.

According to this website, he died in Baghdad, which is unlikely.

The Arabic article and this book miscopied or misread the original text from the sources I have mentioned! 🤓--TheEagle107 (talk) 10:55, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for looking into this! I have changed the infobox information (and corrected the link for Tarsus in the main text). Could you possibly add one of the sources you listed as a reference for the place of death in the infobox? I do not know Arabic, and I rely on Google Translate only to help with basic fact-finding, so I'm probably not qualified to construct a proper reference for this material. —ShelfSkewed Talk 14:42, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Done PS: Abu Ishaq al-Shirazi in his Tabaqat al-Fuqaha' and Ibn Kathir in his Tabaqat al-Shafi'iyyin, as well as Hajji Khalifa in his Sullam al-Wusul ila Tabaqat al-Fuhul and Ibn Qadi Shuhba in his Tabaqat al-Shafi'iyya all of them said that he died in Tarsus.

Hope this helps! All the best.--TheEagle107 (talk) 17:59, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
