Scrap iron[edit]

The Sixth Avenue structure was made of iron, not steel. Until the 1880s steel prices were too high for it to be a practical material in the amounts needed to build large bridges or elevated railways. The only Sixth Avenue El steel was the rails, and the IRT had a practice of reusing former mainline rails in yards, so the rails may have been lifted before sale of the structure. In fact demo photos I've seen do not show any rails being removed. JoeBrennan (talk) 22:17, 5 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
