Hercules/Heracles[edit]

The name part addition to Thor makes it out to be and is very similar and close to the Greek strongman son of the high God (much as Thor is son of the high god Odin) Zeus named Heracles, or Hercules when the Roman counterpart son of Jove/Jupiter. This should be noted and if anywhere attested to in books or works should be sourced so as not to be original research on my part, but the similarity is so close I do not see how every author on the subject could have omitted that observation. 4.242.174.52 (talk) 13:03, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rewritten[edit]

I have almost completely rewritten the article, adding several 20th-century references to demonstrate the now unanimous scholarly view that the name Horagalles derives from Norse Þórr-karl or its derivative in either Swedish or Norwegian. The view of, for example, Friis that it was impossible to determine which borrowed from which is now superseded. And the varying translations "old man Thor," "Thor the man," "Thor fellow," etc. are all referring to the same term, which can be translated into English in several different ways, so I have equated them accordingly. I've also added as further reading 2 articles by Axel Olrik that appear to have been the first in-depth examinations of the material from the point of view of information on Germanic paganism, but that also presumably sum up the Sami material well; in particular, we don't cover here the thunder-god's servant, and that should be added, together with any more on Ravdna that is available. But I may have reached the limits of Google Books.

I am also going to modify our article on Tiermes. There is general agreement that he is the same god, so I am not entirely sure we should have two articles, but my understanding is that from an overall Sami point of view Tiermes is the better name to use, whereas Horagalles is the name by which he is known in the scholarship on Norse-Finnic influence and specifically on Thor. I propose that Tiermes be merged into this article. Both articles, and those sources that mention both, agree that they are names for the same deity. This article contains more information on the god, as well as having the section on the connection with Thor. There is very little information at Tiermes that is not also here. Also my impression is that there is currently more scholarly discussion under the name Horagalles than Tiermes. Yngvadottir (talk) 04:26, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
