Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI, Chinese: 香港知專設計學院) is a design school in Tiu Keng Leng, Hong Kong. It was founded by the Vocational Training Council in 2007 and moved into a purpose-built campus in 2010. The school offers higher diplomas, academic degrees, and continuing education programmes in various design disciplines.

History[edit]

HKDI was envisioned to centralise existing design programmes offered at various other Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education campuses in Sha Tin, Kwai Chung, Kwun Tong, and Tsing Yi.[1]

In April 2006, the VTC opened an international architecture competition to design a new campus able to accommodate 4,000 students. The competition was judged by a panel of noted architects including Richard Meier and Rocco Yim.[1] The winning design, which beat out 162 other submissions, was produced by the French architecture firm Coldefy & Associés.[2]

[edit]

The HKDI’s corporate signature is comprised of a symbol and a bilingual logotype. The design of the symbol is based on the “HKDI” letterforms and embodies an inherent cultural characteristics. The characters “HK” at the upper part of the symbol resemble the Chinese character “天” meaning sky or heaven, and “DI” at the lower portion has phonetic resemblance to “Earth” “地” in Putonghua. Unifying heaven and earth conveys harmony, truth and beauty, all of which are fundamental elements in the nature and discipline of design.

The podium houses four auditoriums, a cafe, and gallery and exhibition space. Sports facilities include an indoor games hall, outdoor basketball courts, and a swimming pool.[2]

Delete the location of "Junk Bay" in the first paragraph. The line should read "Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI, Chinese: 香港知專設計學院) is a design school in Tiu Keng Leng, Hong Kong." Online2018 (talk) 02:47, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The confusion stems from the fact that both the bay and new town are called Tseung Kwan O/Junk Bay. Tiu Keng Leng is a subdistrict of the new town, so it is appropriate to include both place names. Citobun (talk) 16:01, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
