Nationality[edit]

I'm not sure what nationality should Tung be assigned to. He's apparently a Dutch citizen racing under a Chinese driving license. Similar problem would also arose when talking about footballer's natinalities. When somebody plays for one country's national team, then he is of that nationality no matter what he originally was holding. But it also means that he had already obtained a new passport to cap that new country. This case now is that Tung doesn't hold a Chinese passport (China doesn't permit double nationality and Tung never said he would give up Dutch nationality). Maybe FIA has a say on this issue alreay? It's so weird about the nationality of this guy:

  • China doesn't permit a dual nationality.
  • He doesn't speak Chinese. (This is not a reason to reject his proposal to gain a Chinese nationality if he proposed)
  • He's with a Chinese license.
  • The official sites of GP2 Series [1] and of Renault [2] have shown for a long time that his nationality is Chinese.
  • Also in 2006, some Chinese media [3] (in Chinese) proudly reported that he will change his nationality to Chinese (the title Tung has given up his Dutch nationality is just a stunt, ignore it and read the article, he said that he "will" give up his Dutch nationality)
  • But in April 2010, in front of the Chinese media [4] (in Chinese), he was still with a Dutch passport and still saying that he "wish to" give up the Dutch nationality.
  • There has been no further report so far. If he indeed changed his nationality, the Chinese media would be very glad to report this.

So I soppose that his nationality is actually Dutch now. Official sites of GP2 Series and of Renault get wrong. Nationality ≠ where you gained your license. Nationality is not issued by FIA nor Renault. Dutch passport is more convenient for traveling (See: Visa requirements for Dutch citizens and for Chinese citizens), while he and his boss Renault need for Chinese market.--Tomchen1989 (talk) 03:04, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If he doesn't speak Chinese, what does he speak? I assume Dutch... and probably English; anything else? 65.94.47.63 (talk) 05:41, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Racing infoboxes are for racing nationality; i.e. the country issuing the licence under which the driver races. They've got nothing to do with citizenship or passports. For racing purposes, Tung is Chinese, so that's what flag goes in the infobox. It says he's Dutch in the lead. JonChappleTalk 09:09, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I know this was a long time ago, but I've fixed the wording per this discussion and the sources on Tung. While he is born in the Netherlands and as of 2010, holds a Dutch passport, China does not recognize dual nationality. And I don't see any recent proof of him giving up Dutch citizenship and becoming a Chinese citizen. Nor do I see any sources provided on the Chinese government deciding to make him an exception to their rules and allowing him to hold both Dutch and Chinese citizenship simultaneously. For whatever reason, he drives with a Chinese license and resides in China now.
Hyphenated terms like "Chinese-Dutch" often imply ethnicity, and should not be linked per WP:OVERLINK. Given the complex nationality situation of his life, it is recommended to omit nationality altogether per WP:ETHNICITY or simply state the place of birth as with other examples like Einstein. I'm leaving it as "Dutch-born" who drives with a Chinese license until further discussion. Clear Looking Glass (talk) 00:07, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
