Game Plan

OK, what to do with this article? My thought is this should focus on two areas: (1) the emergence of early poetic traditions and language and (2) the various articles on Wikipedi poeatry a focused on "National" poetries (e.g., British, Irish, Ottoman, etc.). in the National poetries, I think it should take an overarching view, looking not at the detail but instead at the interaction and development of the poetries at a higher level. I also think the article should tie in to the Years in poetry work set up by Stumps. Any thoughts before the serious work begins? Sam 16:03, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Poetry predates written text?

The very first sentence of this article claims that "Poetry predates written text." It uses the following link as a reference: https://www.yukon-news.com/news/poet-goes-from-newsprint-to-verse/

This reference is a very soft journalistic piece about a specific modern poet and does not itself justify that poetry does indeed predate written text in any way whatsoever.

Perhaps this claim should be removed from the article or at the very least the reference should be replaced with something more credible (I was not able to find a more credible reference for this claim in a short research session).

I totally agree. A reference to Beissinger (2012) could work. But since there is no record, whether there was oral poetry before written poetry has to remain speculation. MH Beissinger. 2012. Stressed poetry

Ancient Greek 'pop culture' discovery rewrites history of poetry and song summarizes LESS CARE, MORE STRESS: A RHYTHMIC POEM FROM THE ROMAN EMPIRE. It claims the text moves forward the date of the transition from quantitative poetry to stressed poetry in Western poetry. I came here to read about that transition but I don't see it mentioned in the text. Is the transition mentioned in other words I didn't understand?
