Colonial Period

There virtually nothing at all here on the region's colonial period, which is what I came here to read about. Very disappointing. 188.220.240.150 (talk) 18:15, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

Proposed Merge

I just realized that there is a whole other main article on West Africa and once I saw it, I noticed that there is extensive historical information within that article already. Therefore, I suggest merging any unique content of this article into that one (though I suspect that much of the content of this page may in fact be duplicate).

If merged, perhaps we can move AFI over to the main article for the week, as that article does appear to need much improvement as well. David Condrey (talk) 06:11, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

I don't think a merge is required, as long as this article stays on scope (history, not geography, geology, etc) and WP:SUMMARYSTYLE is used in the more general article West Africa. An example of how this can work is History of the United States, a detailed article that is summarised in United States § History. - Evad37 [talk] 06:22, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
I agree with Evad37, the question you should ask yourself when considering a merge is "Is this article subject notable, considered in the absence of the parent article?" If the answer is no, then we should undoubtedly merge. However in this case, the history of west africa has been discussed in many sources. --NickPenguin(contribs) 09:50, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
Per significance and available sources, best left as a standalone article. NorthAmerica1000 15:38, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
Important and vital article to West Africa, so no merge required. ///EuroCarGT 16:37, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

Expansion ideas and sources

I'm making a list of existing articles from which we may get some expansion ideas. The article overall needs improvement, but in particularly I think a good section on the modern states (post WW2) and the prehistory/early history of the kingdoms/empires would be welcome. There should also likely be sections titled "Scramble for Africa" and "Decolonisation of Africa" since it is a noted topic. --NickPenguin(contribs) 13:08, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

Articles to search for content

  • I've added a find sources template atop in the tag area. NorthAmerica1000 18:43, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

Pre TAFI assessment

I assessed this article as it was at the start of the week. My thoughts are that the article definitely needs more citations. My decision on structure was that the lead needed to be expanded to include a more developed paragraph, preferably in my view, but perhaps not necessarily, without a list. The article just passed on content, but future expansions, while of course welcome, should take care not to leave unanswered questions in an article where connections between one part and another are not always immediately clear. Lead section images

The images at the top of the page, both of West Africa, appear contradictory. Possibly the one with 2 shades of green refers to before and after the period where the Sahara expanded mentioned within the article under Geographic history? CSJJ104 (talk) 17:21, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

I looked into it a bit, and one refers to the western geographic portion, while the other one shows the cultural/social region of West Africa. I think the article refers more to the second one. --NickPenguin(contribs) 18:42, 19 August 2014 (UTC)
While we're on the topic of images: all images are currently either maps or satellite images. There could be more diversity. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 00:01, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
I agree, the image is confusing. The light green area shows which other countries could be considered to be situated in the West of Africa, while they are really in North Africa. It's confusing at best, but probably OR.--Melody Lavender (talk) 05:30, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

"Five major periods"

I know the lede makes this distinction, but is there any particular reason that the history is divided into 5 reasons, or is this just an arbitrary number? Maybe it would be better characterized if it was a more general summary. --NickPenguin(contribs) 02:02, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Unless reliable sources indicate that historians commonly use those divisions, it does seem rather arbitrary. In any case, the lead needs rewriting and expansion to properly summarise the article. - Evad37 [talk] 03:38, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

American and British English.

This article uses British and American English. organisation (British) and honor (American). See this report [1]. Cheers,  ΤheQ Editor  Talk? 16:21, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

I would suggest using British English per MOS:TIES, as West Africa is an area with former British colonies (eg Nigerian English is based on British English). Any objections? - Evad37 [talk] 00:49, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
Probably the most logical idea. --NickPenguin(contribs) 10:47, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
I agree, and I added a template, and already made some corrections. Nigerian English in its present day form uses mostly BE spelling. So with Nigeria being one of the biggest English speaking nations in the area, I think this is a clear call. --Melody Lavender (talk) 14:16, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
BTW: The template has been removed during the recent copyedits, while "corrections" have been made to American spellings. Unless advised otherwise, I'll re-add the template and reverse the spelling changes tomorrow. Tomásdearg92 (talk) 23:15, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
I have added the article template back, as it seemed to have been removed by mistake. I've also created an edit notice so editors will actually see a message and be less likely to be changing spellings back and forth between the English styles. - Evad37 [talk] 23:38, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

copyedit

Hey guys, just a note. I will be doing a copyedit of the article, but I'll be doing it section by section starting with the lead and ending before the see also. This may take a while, so if you'd like to help out, help would be much appreciated ;) Brandon (MrWooHoo)Talk to Brandon! 17:09, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Does someone mind checking over my edits to the lead's picture, and the copyedit I did to the lead? Cheers! Brandon (MrWooHoo)Talk to Brandon! 17:23, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
I think your improvements look great, thanks for your contributions. --NickPenguin(contribs) 00:21, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

What's with the weird tangent?

The Historiographic and Conceptual Problems of North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa section barely even mentions West Africa, seems almost entirely focused on North Africa and seems to have consist entirely of a regurgitation of three articles. I fail to see why it was deemed relevant enough to West African history to be added. Woerer1 (talk) 16:35, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
