Suggestions

1. I need help with this. I am trying to find chronological historical information to go here but am stuggling to find a balance as I have a strong knowledge of aviation history but am significanly more patchy elsewhere. I am a native of the county and live only *just* outside and am hence able to visit and do some research and photography. I think that at the moment the best thing to do is to divide into structured periods covering more volume than the centenaries that are there at the moment - i.e. Prehistory, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, Romano British, Saxon, Norman, etc, though open to suggestions. Neolithic long barrow burial not far away at Felthorpe

rectangular and oval enclosures Norfolk at Marlingford, Langley, and Kettlestone. The latter appears to have two opposed entrances. One partitularly interesting example at Roughton, Norfolk occurs adjacent to a small causewayed enclosure.

New content

Hi there, I've added a few notes to the page and will hopefully get the chance to expand on them over the coming months. I was thinking it might be a good idea to have a "Famous People" section for each time period that briefly lists noted historial characters born in that period and links through to their relevant articles? Any objections to this ? Thanks Andy

prehistory split?

as the prehistoric side of this artical is the most? complete and depends solely on archaeological evidence how about a split with a new artical called prehistoric norfolk??? how would one go about this???

Burston Strike School

Sorry, I haven't been to Norfolk for 40 years apart froma quick visit by plane to an airfield. As a teacher, I am interested in the Burston Strike School, scene of the longest running strike in British history, and commemorated every year by trades unins with a meeting and picnic in the village where the school still exists as a museum. But there was no article in Wikipedia about it, so I wrote one. Seeing as people with an interest in Norfolk, and hopefully living there, will visit this article, may I appeal to any of you who can to see if you add more to my page and maybe set up a page on the village of Burnston itself. I am going to have a go, but won't be able to get far without local knowledge. Also, as a major part of Norfolk history in the 20C perhaps some mention and link could be made from here. Revamp

This article needs a major revamp. I have started the process by removing 'red links'. I now intend to place all the 'Mention' notes that exist in the article in 'Talk:History of Norfolk' prior to making use them at a later stage.Amitchell125 (talk) 09:17, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Mention : 1.) The coming of the Danes who sacked Norwich. 2.) King Cnut and his control of the Norfolk area. 3.) Saxon towns and villages.

Mention: Early Saxon villages of: Norwic/Norvic, Coslany, Westwic, & Conesford, all close to the river Wensum.

Mention: Local legend of Black Shuck may date to this period.

Mention: The puritans who left Norfolk for New England.

Mention: Thomas Paine one of the founding fathers of the US.

The coming of the railway.

Mention: Admiral Nelson and the effects of the industrial revolution on the county. Colmans mustard founded.

Mention: Edith Cavell.

Mention: The Sandringham Regiment which disappeared to a man during their advance towards the Turkish lines while fighting at Gillipoli in 1915

Talk about: the growth of Norwich commercially, the strength of local tourism, the start of the decline in North Sea Oil and Gas. The struggle that agriculture is undergoing.

The interwar period saw the first sustained mechanisation of farms with horse drawn equipment gradually falling from use to be replaced with steam and petrol driven machinery. Many farms grew in size as smaller farms were swallowed up being uncompetitive.

Talk about the Norfolk people that went to fight, the people that came to Norfolk from all over the world to fight and their impact on the community. Bombing of Norwich and the rest of the county, building of airfields, threat of invasion, impact of evacuees from London.

Talk about the growth of North Sea Oil, the changes to agriculture as it fully mechanised and farm employment shrunk. The growth of Norwich as a centre for insurance. The impact of the cold wae and the impact of a large number of permanent US Service personnel.

Its a good site for older books that are copyright free now. This one [1] is the advanced search page - just type in "history of england" or similar and the books are all free to download and can be quoted on WIki.

I just downloaded "The Relation of the Hrolfs Saga Kraka and the Bjarkarimur to Beowulf by Olson" and "The History of England in Three Volumes, Vol.I., Part A." by David Hume

My favourite was this one though [2] "King Alfred of England by Jacob Abbott" as it has some pretty nifty pics lol

Restoration of etymology and other notes

Hi

I have just edited the etymology almost to what I had previously put. The paragraph is about the name Norfolk and the "it" at the beginning of the second sentence is "Norfolk" so does not need to have "Norfolk" in the second sentence. I have also changed to from terms as the examples given are two and so plural.

I have been a bit busy with cleanup duties on two projects, Ukraine and Robotics but will spend some time on here later and try and sort out the cat tree for "History of Norfolk" -> "Archaeology of Norfolk" as well as "Archaeology of England" -> "Archaeology of Norfolk"

Article is looking good but may need a little copy editing - "dated as XXX years old" is the same as "dated as being XXX years old" surely ?

Lead

It's nice to see all the recent work on this article. I'm wondering about the lead - It's almost exclusively about the prehistoric period. It seems like much of the info there should be in the lower sections, and that some coverage of later periods should be in the lead. Whoah there horsey (mere)! By prehistoric period, I take it you are referring to 200BC- some date after that?

There are two small sentences on prehistoric, in the first paragraph. The second paragraph summarises details from pre Roman conquest, the Roman conquest and Anglo-Saxon. The third paragraph needs expanding to include the late middle ages and 16th-19th centuries. That is problematic as the 18th and 19th century sections could do with expanding somewhat, and the 20th century certainly need some more detail.

I think it would be pointless to take out details from the first two paragraphs that will only go back in again as the article gets bigger. When the lead was last looked at the "Mediæval Norfolk" and "Norfolk during the Tudors and the Stuarts" sections were not there, by all means summarise those into the lead, as well as anything from the 19th and 20th that can be. Expanding is more appropriate than reducing at this point. The article currently stands at 25,000 characters, something which means three paragraphas are in order, and as the article stands the first is rather short anyway.
