Missing Citations[edit]

The content of this page is rather good, however it is somewhat lacking in citations. I intend to comb through the text and add approporaite citations as I go along. This process may take some time so please feel free to join in. Mtaylor848 (talk) 12:54, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It might be best to get hold of a book on the history of Leeds (eg Stephen Burt and Kevin Grady, Illustrated History of Leeds, or Derek Fraser (FraZer?) History of Modern Leeds (approx title)) rather than just looking for random online refs. On a topic like this old-fashioned print sources are likely to be more reliable, and more satisfactory if we want to take this to GA or FA eventually. I've got Burt & Grady but have just spent far too much time on Places in Leeds, so not keen to start a mass referencing project right now. The original editor gave us his source - if you could find that in the local library you'd have a flying start, would only need to add refs to page numbers. The article was quite small - this small - before I started inserting content from The Story of English Towns - Leeds, all of which has inline citations (albeit not to the page numbers). That book is available online & linked from the references section. Anything you can do to improve the article, Mtaylor848, would be greatly appreciated. Sadly my wiki time is too limited just now to join in. --Tagishsimon (talk) 13:46, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Further revision[edit]

I am currently researching the History of Leeds (to 1974) with a view to revising the article using more modern sources.--Harkey (talk) 08:03, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That would be welcome. Much of what we have is from a single & very dated source. I look forward to reading your changes. Good luck. --Tagishsimon (talk) 12:27, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have suspended editing this and other Leeds related articles until the current discussion at Talk:Leeds resolves a number of outstanding contentious issues.--Harkey (talk) 13:19, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment comment[edit]

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:History of Leeds/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

.
  1. Requires addition of inline references using one of the {{Cite}} templates
  2. Main existing reference needs page numbers specifying for each occurance
  3. Lead needs to introduce the article with some basic detail on Leeds in case reader came here direct

  1. Needs expanded coverage of the woolen cloth trade, industrial revolution, and C19 & C20 history. --Tagishsimon (talk) 12:52, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ola hacker wikipedia[edit]

Unable to remove this line as it doesn't show in the source. Also appears a the end of History of Hampshire and at the start of Timeline of Liverpool with nothing in the source to delete.

Immigration[edit]

Seems strange no mention of immigration. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 36.11.224.11 (talk) 07:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Good point, given the history of the city's immigrants over the centuries - Irish, Jewish, Afro-Caribbean, Asian, European, etc - and heritage of synagogues, carnival, etc. Starting with rural-to-urban within England. The council's archived 2007 "history of Leeds" doesn't mention it either, and I'm away from my bookshelf of Leeds books as I type, but there must be plenty of Reliable sources for a section of this article, or a new article, or an expansion of Demography of Leeds to give historical background. I remember hearing a talk many years ago saying you could trace the movements of Irish immigrants by the dates of foundation of Catholic churches in the city. PamD 09:10, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Couple of pages from Fraser's History of Modern Leeds for a start. PamD 09:33, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@PamD: Leeds Museums had a placement person who created a draft of something similar https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Leeds_Immigration - their placement has stopped now, and I've not a had a chance to do anything with the draft, but if anyone wanted to use & change it that would fine!
