Note 24 - Date of opening.

While Phillip Hammond did open the southbound bore of the tunnel it occurred not on Friday 29th July but on Wednesday 27th July at 10.38am

It was necessary to open the southbound bore first because the existing old road crosses the new northbound road. Once the southbound bore was opened the southbound traffic no longer crosses the road. It took the rest of wednesday and thursday to close off the old southbound road across the nothbound carriageway and check everything else was OK.

At 9am on Friday 29th July following a site meeting with all the relevant parties the decision was made that the northbound carriageway could be opened once the final contractors vehicles had been removed. The northbound carriageway was opened with a police escort at 11.25am on Friday 29th July 2013.

Information comes from other BBC News entries on the internet about the southbound and northbound openings.
