"Because she was Jewish"[edit]

Hilde wasn't Jewish, but only married to a born Jew, Georg Benjamin. (Of course among Socialists there where no such things as conversions on occasion of marriage.) Yes, she was portrayed subcutaneously as being Jewish by right-wing western German propaganda in the 50ies, but she wasn't – neither according to the Halacha nor to the Nuremberg race laws in fascist Germany ;-). Yes, her parents were in a way more or less religious, but they were not Jewish, but very liberal, German middle-class Protestants without any Jewish background. Americans even would not call such milieus "religious"!

Hilde simply was forbidden to practice in 1933 because she was a Communist. The persecution of Jews in fascist Germany really started only in the mid 30ies (after the 1936 Olympics in Berlin), whilst immediately after January 33 the Communists were, to say the least, removed from public life.

And what a nonsense: "frequent death sentences". Hilde sentenced two (2) people to death in four (4) years of service as vice president of the GDR Supreme Court. These passages of the article uncritically reflect western cold war propaganda.

The whole article desperately deserves a revision.

I find myself troubled that it should matter so much whether her upbringing was Jewish or protestant. But yes, for some perfectly good purposes it does. And since no one else has responded to you on this in nearly a year I took the liberty of checking out German wikipedia. Which agrees with you on this. Also German wiki gives a source. Wikipedia likes sources. Especially where stuff becomes - or might reasonably be expected to become - contentious. So I changed it.

On whether or not she frequently sentenced people to death ... well, she certainly had a reputation. But I can't be bothered to find a source for that. And I accept that reputations are not necessarily based on truth.

On your parting shot: "The whole article desperately deserves a revision", please do it. It appears that you have knowledge and with any luck you have sources. BUT PLEASE PLEASE include you sources.

1936? The mentioned Nuremberg Laws were in 1935, the "Gesetz zur Wiederherstellung des Berufsbeamtemtums" in 1933.

cold war propaganda[edit]

The west German propaganda was clear, H.B. sentenced people to death for having been Nazis and for war crimes. She also sentenced one person to death who was accused of having sabotaged east Germany as part of kampfgruppe gegen unmenschlichkeit (KGU). She was made an enemy of the state in west germany, while she was rather a show case for feminism and de-nazification in east germany. This article and it s german original still continues the cold war propaganda and is one sided in the west german point of view. It cannot be changed, as it is defended by a group of editors.
