I believe there to be an error in the listing of High Sheriff’s of Northumberland. William Selby 1603 and 1606 is not of Biddlestone but of Twizell. He was born at Twizell Northumberland abt. 1551 and he purchased a place called Ightham mote in Kent in 1591 where he installed his older brother John. John’s oldest son William was of similar age to his uncle at Twizell. William of Twizell died unmarried in 1611 and his nephew inherited so he must be the Sir William Selby who was High Sheriff in 1616. Selby of Biddlestone at this period was Sir Alexander Selby b. Abt 1577 at Biddlestone, married Joan Widdrington in Abt. 1605. Their eldest son was William, born Abt. 1608 but much too young to have held high office. --Vicsel (talk) 14:51, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • This is correct in some respects. The reference Archaeologia Aeliana clearly shows the Willam Selby who was HS in 1603, 1606 and 1616 to be the son of John of Twizell. See also Selby family. He inherited Twizell on the death of his father John in 1595 and Ightam Mote, Kent on the death of his uncle William in 1611. There's another error regarding Henry Ogle of Eglingham. He was not High Sheriff in 1644. Nor was he a knight. He's addressed as Capt. Henry Ogle of Eglingham or Henry Ogle, esq. From 1643 to 1650, he was sequestering land for Parliament in the north. He was a one of the Deputy Lieutentant Commissioners in Nov/Dec 1644 for the northern counties. ... It was his son Capt. John Ogle of Eglingham who became High Sheriff in Northumberland in 1654 (citing Sir Henry Asgil Ogle, author of Ogle & Bothal, 1902).
