I think that the bishop and chancellor are considered to have been different men. G.W.S. Barrow's The Charters of David I, previewable on GoogleBooks, treats them as different. He also states on page 32 that the origins of the chancellor are unknown, and that the chancellor remained in office until "c.1135 or earlier"; and then on page 72 Barrow dates a particular charter, to 1128 x 1136, using the 1128 election of a bishop of Dunfermline, and the date of the chancellor's death or demission of office. So Barrow thinks that the chancellor may have been dead in 1136. Furthermore, the ODNB article on the bishop makes no mention of him being a chancellor [1]. The "People of Medieval Scotland" website also treats them as different people: Herbert, chancellor (d.c.1135), Herbert, bishop of Glasgow (d.1164).--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 09:59, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
