why does it refer to him as a BG, when he was a MG when he commanded the 2ID and a LTG while serving as the XVIII ABN CORPS? if there are no responses to this in a couple days, i'm going to change it to Lieutenant General Parsecboy 13:34, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My Camp Casey Service 74-75, Gunfighter was one of the Army's most talented officers. I served under General Emerson when he commanded the 2nd ID and was proud to be under his leadership. His Patton like tactics and love for his troops made my Army experience into a powerful memory. I wish our politicians had just 1/4 of General Emerson's leadership and judgement. 4/20/08

Reverse cycle training[edit]

It is not correct that "he insisted his troops train only at night" He was a believer in reverse cycle training (Traing at night, sleep during the day) however he did not keep this up year round.Eomrat 17:26, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is from seven years ago, but I reworded the content for clarity and added a "citation needed" template, rather than removing the content. --76.189.111.199 (talk) 22:15, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

the actual page title needs to be changed to henry emerson, wikipedia does not normally include nicknames on page titles 82.32.184.155 15:50, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

David H. Hackworth[edit]

Why doesn't this page mention his work with Hackworth? Hack wrote the Vietnam Primer with S.L.A. Marshall, outlining the "out G'ing the G" concept before Hack became the Battalion commander of 4/39 INF under Col Emerson. And as far as the Checkerboard, I'm not sure if I heard it being used earlier by LTC Moore with 1/7 CAV or Hack with the 101 around the same time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.164.74.189 (talk) 23:25, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Here's a good source on Emerson and Hackworth. Emerson tries to persuade Army Chief of Staff Creighton Abrams to recall Hack to active duty as an assistant division leader. Says Emerson: "I want a hotshot general as soon as possible. This is a troubled division and I'm trying to shape it up." David in DC (talk) 18:40, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Age[edit]

When was this guy born? (also please add this info to the Emerson (surname) page) WikiLoverr (talk) 04:49, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Either 1926 (http://www.ancestry.com/1940-census/usa/Arkansas/Henry-E-Emerson_3nzz8g) or 1928 (http://www.tributes.com/show/Henry-E.-Emerson-90556464). --Ursus Maior (talk) 00:06, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong Emerson! General Emerson is alive. Ursus, never add death or birth info into an article, especially a BLP, unless you have rock solid evidence from reliable sources to show it's the correct person. You did it both here and here. Your errors have been corrected. --76.189.111.199 (talk) 20:45, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What a bad headline[edit]

I just added a ref, titled "ARMY BRIGADE HEAD HURT IN VIET AIR CRASH." I thought it was funny because it sounds like he hurt his head. I think what they were trying to say is that the head of the brigade was hurt. I guess they couldn't fit "commander" in the available space. Rees11 (talk) 02:08, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Link to bio[edit]

I copy/pasted this from the article:

Aloha- I hope that this new addition to the Generals description resolves alot of the mystery surrounding one of Americas greatest Military minds. This is an actual interview ofthe General created by and for the United States of America Archives on important Military figures. It is a wealth of information as can only be decribed by General Henry Everett Emerson himself. This was produced forthe USA government and is an actual, factual interview with the General in 2004. The author is none other than Mr. Emerson himself therefore any information within it is the information he wishs history to remember his careeer and life by. I hope you enjoy iy in your study of American history. The link say that it is freely distributable so I am posting it so you van read the 100+ page interview for yourself. I hope I am listing the references correctly because as the General was indeed a close friend to my father I want only the truth within wikipedia to help in its purpose to spread truth and to be the real encyclopedia of our time. Here below is the link to the pdf file for your pleasure. [1] PrimalHawaii (talk) 14:03, 12 February 2013 (UTC) PrimalHawaii By the way I have a company photo of the weapons company prior to deployment that I have done alot of editing on and saving of individual photos of each man in the unit. I am happy to offer anyone who had a grandfather or father or great grandfather who was in this unit and may possibly have been lost any potential photos I have of their relatives for free. I have also sent them to the Historian at the 5th Units historian ----- Simply ask and i will either send you a file via email or if you do not have access to a good quality photo printer I will print you a copy on high gloss paper and mail it to you after i send you the group photo and you identify your relative. Please only one copy per family on paper and mail then you can get more prints made for other family members. I do this as a gift to my father who passed away. Erroneous editing of Emerson's alleged death and date of birth[edit]

I posted the following comments on the BLP/Noticeboard[1] and thought it was important to post them here, also.
As I said in an edit summary in the article[2] and in my reply to PrimalHawaii (Rev. Joed Miller) in the thread he started at the help desk, the editing regarding the general's alleged death and date of birth was a travesty. The only sources used to to verify the claims were horrendous. As another editor so wisely pointed out in Emerson's article, "ironclad" proof is necessary if one is going to claim that the subject of a BLP has died. This goes for the date of birth as well. It was extremely irresponsible and incompetent editing. And the most infuriating part is the fact that multiple editors kept adding back the highly contentious content, even though there were zero reliable sources to back it up. It was a perfect example of why Wikipedia has such a lousy reputation among a lot of people. Although he did so in a highly inappropriate manner, the reverend was pleading with everyone to remove the faulty content, but was treated like a criminal. Based on the information he provided, it was abundantly clear that he knows Emerson well, and that he is indeed alive. Also remarkable is the fact that no one, until a few hours ago, even took a few moments to explain to the reverend the appropriate manner and place to express his concerns and provide information, which is why he continued doing it. Obviously, he's new to Wikipedia and had no idea what the appropriate process is. Editors need to use some basic common sense, particulary when editing vital content like this. Besides the bogus sources that were used, it's amazing that no one stopped to consider why, if a highly-decorated three-star general actually died, there were absolutely no reliable sources to support it. Obviously, when a person of Emerson's stature dies, it will most certainly be reported on by numerous reliable, mainstream sources. But instead, some editors inexplicably chose to use some obviously nonsense sources simply and solely because they saw someone with the same name. They could care less that there was no evidence in the sources to show it was this Emerson. This incident is a black eye on Wikipedia. I hope we learn from it. In any case, thank you to the editors who have been working to resolve this mess. --76.189.111.199 (talk) 17:23, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

General Henry "Hank" Emerson[edit]

You know you all speak as though you are prison lawyers. Your condescending apologies that have more attachments to them than serious answers are just comedic in substance. First you make it impossible to reply and insist most people concede to the use of html text and langguage who (for gods sake are using "wikiperdia" as a reference to lifes issues!!! Getting them ( myself included) to be able to click once on a button simply "REPLY TO THREAD HERE" is one thing but when you leave here you never know if your texgt even went anywhere and to make it worse when you get a reply back it is so vaque and so vividly on the side of your regular buddies (Editors...LOL.. who actually made them Editors?? Do they have degrees from universities like i do? Have they been published under several psedonmyns for 40 years as I have in multiple genres? But you see THOSE are the true topics that should be corrected in the "Vandalism" & Conflict ofInterest Sections.." !! They are the kind of topics that are based on opinion and innuendo and just believing something because its your Buddy that said it, heck with a simple spokeo search or a simply reaching out to the VA or any of the dozens of places that will verify they are wrong !!! Your Editors just jump on strangers, call them names, swear like 14 year olds, and use the "delete" buttons as though they were badges of Honor !! For the TRUTH Of the matter is this (except in the case of rumour or cyber stories) relatives, extra longtime family friends, comrades in arms, reading actual correspondence can "ONLY" be done by those closest to the person in question. Truthful easily answered questions such as birth, deatch, marriage, divorce, children, parents, residences, etc are ALL best obtained from these closest people there is no "conflict of interest..". Then in contrast these same people are the ones who may not be the best intervies for things such as rumours on the net in refernce to personal lives. And ALWAYS the best way to obtain truthful infornation i indeed from the actual peson !!! Especially when there is a 1 million to 1 consensus that the person is alive. Even after my last entire rant, which gave literally a list of sites approved BY the General and his units and your long reply (apology??) before i could even reply the guy wildr already replies that he WANTS TO SEE A REFERENCE THAT GUARENTEES PROVES HE IS WRONG !!! Jesus i JUST gave it to everyone for the tenth time !!! It is on the GENERALS OWN BIOGRAPHY !!!!! The PDF file is FREE to download, it states where he was born, his parents names everything !!! NOT to mention that any historiam would FULLY WELL KNOW that Gen. Emersons father was ALSO a General in the Army as a well known surgeon !! My POINT is instead of letting people who simply "refuse.." to do even the very basic of work to veryify the information they are responsible for is correct have this power to call names, delete posts..etc. WHY NOT demand that they at least CHECK the references they are given to see if indeed they are correct and when they find out they are wrong STOP playing games and let the changes be made ! JESUS DUDE JUST FOR YOUR BLIND EYES I WILL CAP IT ALL OK... HERE IS THE GENERALS OWN BIOPRAPHY AS DISPLAYED ON THE MILITARYS OWN WEBSITE !!!! [3] NOW READ IT AND YOU WILL SEE THE GENERAL is from MILFORD PA. ( NOT ARKANSAS!) YOU WILL SEE HIS PARENTS NAMES !!! AND YOU WILL SEE HE WAS BORN ON MAY 28 1925 in Washington D.C. ! It does NOT say he is dead ! I gave you the 5th Regiments Historians private address to question about being alive as well a the VA or the IRS. I still will not say the Generals present locatiion but IF YOU EVEN BOTHERED to read 1 PAGE of any evidence i provided you would KNOW the answer to that. So leave me alone, we that KNOW the GEneral and are ACTUAL Historians whose work is even in the Library of Congress) do not much care what you will simply declare you are right about!!! And as forthe wishy washy apology my God !!! You admit this guy is whacko and have had many many many hassels even besides me why not grow a pair and get rid ofthe guy!!! He can obviously give an aspirin a headache and under no circumstances will he allow what is right to rule upon what he has already decided can oly be possibly be his way. To me his actions are still not "Vandalism.." they are simply ____ (well I will allow freeom of speech to let each of you who have found yourself in my position fill out). Jargon[edit]

I found sources defining the three terms tagged as jargon if someone wants to edit them in.

  • ".. a thing called the jitterbug. Jitterbugging around, trying to surround enemy units with helicopters,..."
  • "...squad sized elements. These elements had fixed areas of operations comparable to the squares of a checkerboard, and once in these areas of operations they moved continuously from one terrain feature to another in order to interdict the enemy."
  • more detail
  • "..."Eagle Flight" choppers were loaded with Vietnamese airborne troops who were dropped in to support ground forces at the first sign of enemy contact."
"He conceived aerial reconnaissance and combat methods that were employed effectively against the Viet Cong. These included a 'checkerboard concept' that involves small groups covering grid squares to seek out an enemy, 'jitterbug' tactics which are complex maneuvers using helicopters to surround an enemy. To the unitiated this would seem jittery like the dance, and 'Eagle Flights' which were helicopters loaded with local soldiers and flown in quickly to assist foriegn troops in certain situations." Will this change clear the jargon template? Feel free to edit the above.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:38, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hatchets?[edit]

I don't know if this is a credible source but the entry at 12 December 1965 contains a description of what seems like a war-crime that was more or less instigated by Emerson.96.240.128.124 (talk) 17:45, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
