Medal citation[edit]

'ANGELL (Henri), Lieutenant of infantry (active), 2° compagnie des skieurs attached from the 1er Régiment Etranger: Colonel in the Norwegian army enlisted for the duration of the war in our foreign legion, then was assigned at his request to the 2nd company of skiers in North Russia. Exceptional endurance despite his 57 years, giving the example of bravery and energy to all, rendered the most valuable services, distinguished himself, in particular, during a daring and particularly painful raid in Karelia, carried out under his direction and crowned with success, during this operation, was reached with severe frostbite which led to partial amputations of the four limbs.
