Davis's wife; reliability of Shreveport Times[edit]

Please see this message from Rubincontechnologies, who claims to be the subject's grandson. He claims that the Times source is not reliable for who Davis married, given that its reporting disagrees with Baseball Reference, especially when he stopped playing. I am posting this here for greater visibility and so subject-area regulars can weigh in. Sdrqaz (talk) 00:10, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see any contradiction between the newspaper obituary and the BR page.. it says he was a player/coach until 1954 while baseball reference says he stopped playing in 1950... which means he could easily have been a coach from 1951-1954 as the obit says. The article should go by reliable sources.. the obit has a name for the wife and the word of someone claiming to be the grandson is not enough to change the article. If he can find a published source that contradicts what is in the article then it can be changed. Spanneraol (talk) 00:33, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's a paid obituary and those aren't considered a WP:RS. The odd thing is- Paid obituaries are usually taken out by the family....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 01:03, 26 July 2021 (UTC)...William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 01:02, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. I'll check newspapers.com to see if there was any contemporary report of Davis getting married. As an aside, sources differ as to his birthday. Retrosheet and B-R have it as March 7, 1908, while MLB.com has it as May 7, 1908 (which is also what the obituary said). His Social Security Death Index Record (here; fold3.com subscription required) also has it as May 7, 1908. Dmoore5556 (talk) 01:22, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
His WWII draft registration card (here via fold3.com) from October 1940 has his date of birth as May 7, 1908, and lists his wife—Cordie Evelyn Davis—as a contact person. I'll check further for additional sources that may support that name. I'm going to update his date of birth to May 7, 1908, given that two government documents and MLB.com have it as that, along with a footnote. Dmoore5556 (talk) 01:34, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you to Dmoore5556 (talk) for your assistance in correcting this page. I have only just started reviewing it for accuracy. You are correct, my Grandfather was born in May. I have all kinds of information linked to Harry A Davis Jr. and associated aliases in Ancestry.com, with Census and Passenger and Crew list showing my grandfather, Cordie, and my father (Harry 3) being some of the most compelling proof. Please let me know what I can do to help correct this page. Rubincontechnologies (talk) 01:47, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A July 1928 column in the Shreveport Journal, here, reported Davis' marriage to Cordie Eveyln Douglas (maiden name). Given the contemporary nature of that source, I'll update the article accordingly. Dmoore5556 (talk) 01:59, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It does not appear that my Grandfather's date of birth has been corrected. Until I upload a copy of his birth certificate, will the 'Find a Grave" link work? https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/46461529/harry-albert-davis#view-photo=60503401. At your convenience, please correct the date of birth. Or, should I request an update from someone else, or a different process?
Thank you. Rubincontechnologies (talk) 19:20, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Again, my thanks for the update. PLEASE NOTE: Douglass is spelled with 2 "s". Again, a newspaper is incaccurate! Rubincontechnologies (talk) 02:19, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Also, there is a request for citation concerning his employment with P&S. https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/2469/images/12762313?pId=747567724 (if you are a member) shows his employment (as well as Cordie again!) Rubincontechnologies (talk) 02:24, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
